Even with my keen interest in history, only recently have I learned about Ft. Delaware and even more recently about the opportunity to visit. For my family of 3, $36 total paid for our boat ride from Delaware City and park admission. We were able to roam freely through the fort, reconstructed POW barracks, and interact with park staff dressed in clothes appropriate for 1864. Their knowledge and helpfulness made the fort come alive with history. We enjoyed our time greatly to include watching a cannon being fired; there are additional “behind the scenes” tours available for a small extra fee. Based upon numbers of visitors and limitations on the ferry, you have approximately two hours to spend on the island once you arrive, but this is not hard-and-fast depending on the number of visitors. The day my family and I were there, crowds were light. I highly recommend Ft Delaware State Park for anyone interested in history, or simply exploring an old fort. Note: it was very hot the day we were there. Water was available, but if you want something else, or bottled water, or snacks, bring your own. (You must carry your trash out with you). Also, the yellow flies (small horseflies) were HORRIBLE on some parts of the island, so I recommend bringing insect repellent. They were not a problem inside the fort, but outside.... wow...

We walked from the Fort Delaware shop to Fort DuPont State park, across 5th bridge, through the loop in the park and back to town. Loved the old abandoned buildings of the former military base and the munitions building - creepy! Beautiful scenery and not a soul around. Round trip was 4.6 miles. Can be muddy on the fort trails so bring shoes for that.
