10 Things to Do in Dakar That You Shouldn't Miss

For kids and adults. I highly recommend the Zipline Baobab experience. It's really fun, ok a bit scarring, but fun.
You will enjoy for sure and the kids will ask for it again and again!

This is a MUST SEE for anyone visiting Dakar.
The museum is reasonably well organised and certainly the rooms, which are well labelled, are shocking and you get a clear picture of the desperate last weeks of the slaves before being shipped away BUT it's very full and they pack in far too many people at a time making it difficult to appreciate the solemnity.
My experience indicated that people seemed to go as soon as it opened so perhaps might be better trying it towards the end of the day??

Wow!!! The view, the activities, the people, the handicrafts souvenirs, the lake himself, the sensation of floating in it and oily touch on the skin, the beach, the dunes, the camel tour, safari car tour in.the dunes, I mean... a must watch and do when you fly to Dakar.
Unfortunately, this wasn't the period to see the lake really pink. Best period is from January to April they say... better be there at this time :) enjoy

Powerful statue that has a significant meaning. Once inside, there is an exhibition on the ground/first floor, second floor has mini structures showcasing the different ethnic groups. If you get the opportunity to go to the very top, the view is incredible. The guides inside are informative and a great resource to ask questions.

The lighthouse is opened every day 9:00 am to 6:30 pm. A tax collector at the entry make pay rights of visit. The restaurant is open exclusively on evening, every Thursday 7pm-2am (Live Music), Friday 7pm-3am (Live Music), Saturday 7pm-3am (Penthouse Djs Sessions), Sunday 7pm-1am (Senegal Live Music).

I didn't go during the day :(. I went a night (Friday night). They charge a cove 5,000CFA - it includes one drink. You can't drive to the top, they have a shuttle that will take you up. This Cathedral built by the French in 1936 is a very interesting example of art deco combined with African architecture. The four angles on the front are clearly Africans, but also clearly art deco. The inside is also interesting, but quickly viewed. Pope John Paul II visited the church in February 1992.

There are boat rides to the Island every 20minutes I could say. There are private boats and public ones. I opted for the public one which seats about 30 people. The ride is just about 10minutes. There are lots of great views from the Island. There is food and drink available for purchase. People typically spend the day swimming eating, drinking and hanging out on the Island (families, couples etc). The water is clean and the view is truly beautiful. I hope to spend half a day there to catch the full experience. Definitely worth it!

A village of talented artists. Adjoined studios located in a village like setting. Authentic originals that is a cut above the mass marketed "art" in the local tourist markets and side of the street sales. You can visit the studio, see the artist at work, buy or commission pieces. A little pricey for some,but they are authentic and some genuinely beautiful pieces. The village appears to be open at all hours, but not all artists are always there. There's a great variety of studios featuring many different works in 3D, stipple dots, paint, sculpture, pottery (they have a gigantic kiln), tapestry, glass, tile, unusual objetsd'art and some collectibles ---- just about any type of original artwork. The village is a short drive from Dakar...close to the stadium so you get a good cultural exposure before you get to the village. There is a large exhibition space and flyers for upcoming art events at the village and at various places in Senegal. Visiting artists would like it.Tourists have a good exposure to some of the areas most talented trained professional artists.

This place is in the most ideal location and it's very easy to find, actually you find it when you where not looking for it, as its next to the road, but down stairs which makes the view breath king because it's overlooking the sea. Such a beautiful site.

It's incredible to see the things people did to one another in a previous era. Very sad indeed. The island, however, is very quaint and a pleasure to visit. Did you know that this is the island where the filmed the movie The Guns of Navarone?
