Four-acre park providing a natural setting for 125 miniature reproductions of historic buildings and shrines created by a Benedictine monk of the St. Bernard Abbey in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
My wife and I visited here on our way through Cullman. We were glad we stopped by and got to see Joseph Zoettl's structures. They are wonderful recreations and are in excellent condition considering they are exposed to the weather. It was interesting to imagine all of the time and effort that went in to it. Admission is $8 per person and is a loop walk through the grotto.

This bridge is a nice destination to visit on a late morning or afternoon drive. Picturesque. There is something welcoming about an old covered bridge and towns across the States that have one are proud of them and tend to preserve them. Take time for a little walk, conversation and to take photos. Enjoy the serenity and a visit to where so many have traveled over the years.

The Cullman County Museum is located in a replica of the home of the founder of the community, John Cullmann, an immigrant from Germany. Opening in 1975 the Museum has become a point of pride for the community whose history its walls contain. The Museum has displays covering many eras and interest. From Native American presentations to the Main Street displays which focus on Cullman's German heritage and early history. There are many interactive features in the Museum including the popular Arrowhead Rubbing table. Tour groups are welcome and "step-on" tours can be arranged for a first hand experience of the community. Other sites under the Museum umbrella include Weiss Cottage, Cullman's oldest house and the 1913 train depot which is located directly behind the Museum.

Smith Lake Park is located in Cullman County, Alabama on the shores of Lewis Smith Lake within 7 miles of I- 65 at Exit 304. The park is open for year round camping. The park consists of 219 full- service sites, 5 water/ electric sites, 61 tent sites, 9 cabins, 8 pavilions plus playgrounds, pool, fishing pier, a boat launch, chapel and bike/walking trail around the park. This makes Smith Lake Park a destination for fun and relaxation plus a number of special events and festivals at the park throughout the year.
Visited this park to walk, was attacked by an unattended dog...no bite but, pretty scary. Beautiful views near the water. Signs say no alcohol but, I saw many empty beer cans and bleary people. So, it seems to be accepted unless blatant. Doesn't cost anything to sightsee but, the pool and camping are not free. Ride around the huge lake on my brother in laws boat was beautiful.

St. Bernard Abbey is a community of Benedictine monks, who, through lives of prayer and work, strive to seek God and glorify Him in all things. As Benedictines, the monks of St. Bernard Abbey are the recipients of a rich and time-honored tradition that spans fifteen centuries, back to St. Benedict of Nursia (c. 480-547 AD), who, desiring nothing to the love of Christ, gave up all trappings of the world and his affluent Roman lifestyle, eventually becoming the most influential figure in Christian monasticism and the author of its defining guide known as the Rule of St. Benedict. In the nineteenth century, the first Benedictines came to the United States from Germany, and subsequently established St. Bernard Abbey in Cullman, Alabama. Since 1891, always under the direction of an abbot and the Rule, the monks of St. Bernard Abbey have daily offered themselves to God daily by the regular praying of the Divine Office, the Mass, and Lectio Divina (“sacred reading”); as well as through their dedicated work as educators, pastors, and manual laborers. Today, St. Bernard Abbey stands as a vibrant and growing monastery, which is known with affection and respect for the role it continues to play in the life of the Church. From the abbey’s foundation, the monks’ primary apostolate has been their school, known presently as St. Bernard Preparatory School, a coeducational boarding school. Additionally, the monks pastor several parishes in the Diocese of Birmingham. On campus, the monks also operate a retreat center, serving the needs of pilgrim groups and individuals. Many know the abbey as the home of the Ave Maria Grotto, a garden of shrines and miniature models of famous religious sites created by Br. Joseph Zoetle, O.S.B. Finally, there are monks engaged in various crafts and the manual tasks necessary for the operation of their more than 850-acre property, including its farm, buildings, and grounds.
We stayed at the St. Bernard Abbey Guesthouse while our house was being finished. It was a wonderful choice, especially for the thrifty traveler. We had a beautiful walk in shower and 2 twin beds. Down the hall was a meeting room, many tables, and always Coffee! Also a kitchen area with stove, refrigerator sink and dishwasher. We were so happy staying at the St. Bernard Abbey Guesthouse.

Even if you have no need for what they offer, it's just a fun place to visit. Wander around for a couple of hours and revisit many things from your past - rainy days, when you are on vacation, require fun things to do.

We LOVE bacon! A great stop right off the interstate for smoked meats, wine, beer, cheese, candies, seasonings, sauces and more. Clean bathrooms and friendly staff. We made a second stop on a week long trip for.... MORE bacon!

Goat Island Brewery is a wide open space with a gigantic Jinga game, and corn hole game, trivia has started (Which is great adult fun). Water and Soft drinks are available. The only thing that would make the place better would be for rotating food trucks to be there on Thursday, Friday and Saturday or at least one of those nights.
