Cuddalore /kʌdəˈlɔːr/ ( listen) is a city which is the headquarters of the Cuddalore District in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Scholars believe the name Cuddalore is derived from Koodalur, meaning confluence in Tamil. While the early history of Cuddalore remains unclear, the town first rose to prominence during the reign of Pallavas and Medieval Cholas. After the fall of Cholas, the town was ruled by various dynasties like Pandyas, Vijayanagar Empire, Madurai Nayaks, Thanjavur Nayaks, Thajavur Marathas, Tipu Sultan, French and the British Empire. Cuddalore was the scene of Seven Years' War and the Battle of Cuddalore in 1758 between the French and British. It has been a part of independent India since 1947. During the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, Cuddalore was one of the affected towns, with 572 casualties.

Visited this temple of human body with varaha(pig)faced structure. Excellent car ongs are there from the entrance arch itself. A female with front and back view excellently carved with fine details like long hair dressing with twisted pattern usual in south indian women folk ....very nice

If you are looking for something close to nature and away from the maddening crowd then Veeranam lake is the place you should not miss. Tucked away for an hour's drive from Cuddalore is this beautiful place that supplies water to Chennai. The other side of the lake has a huge mangrove forest. There is a drive surrounding the lake for 1.5 kms and is worth exploring. It also attracts many species of birds. It is a perfect photo op destination where you will rarely find tourists. We went during the peak tourist season of Christmas and we were the only ones.
