Cathedral Cove Walk

Reviewed By greatwhitelion - Hobart, Australia

We parked in the car park at the entrance to Hahei and caught the shuttle bus to the start of the walk. Fantastic views from Cathedral Cove viewing deck right at the start. The walk undulates up and down through some forest and open land to Cathedral Cove with lots of great views along the way. It brings you out on the beach where you can walk through Cathedral Rock to the next lovely sandy beach. Along the way are short detours to Stingray Beach and Gemstone Bay both worthwhile.

Coromandel Forest Park

Reviewed By Acineto - Auckland Central, New Zealand

We went up the Pinnacles from the Kauaeranga Road carpark up the Webb Creek Trail. We stayed the night at the Pinnacles hut and then walked back to the carpark through the Billygoat Trail. The trail near the top had amazing views of the forest area around the pinnacles. It was quite scenic all around the area. There were also plenty of other camping and tramping options around the area. The trails all crisis cross with each other so looking at the right trail for your experience isn't too difficult.

RAPAURA Watergardens

A mature property, which has evolved over more than 45 years, Rapaura Watergardens offers something for everyone; native trees, ferns, seasonal flora, lily ponds, meandering walks over lush green lawns, bridges and streams, garden sculptures by an award winning artist and a relaxing bush walk to a cascading waterfall, ‘The Seven Stairs to Heaven’.

Reviewed By FayeF217 - Auckland, New Zealand

An exceptionally beautiful walk in bush like surroundings. The huge Lilly ponds and the waterfalls on one track were very easy to stroll along as was the second section winding around water features, sculptures and amusing sayings on signposts. The Cafe is lovely with good food. Excellent service from Sasha - thank you,so efficient and Sally was a gracious hostess, thank you both. A stand out day out with the Garden Club.

Love this beach - it's so beautiful and even in the height of summer it still feels peaceful. Gorgeous sand, views out to the islands. The southern end (with the estuary) is great for kids, and the waves are good for body surfing/boogie boarding.

Goldmine Experience

NOTICE: STEAM DAYS COMING UP QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY WEEKEND, JUNE 2021. We fire up our steam engine only a few times a year. For a unique experience witness a C19th gold-mining plant being run by a steam engine. NO EXTRA CHARGE ON ENTRY FEES - STEAM DAYS, 5, 6, 7 JUNE. For the past 60 years, we have developed our site into the main tourist attraction in Thames, almost entirely with voluntary labour. We take guided tours through C.19th century tunnels, demonstrate ancient gold processing machinery including a big stamper battery (rarely seen today) and visitors can pan for gold and keep any specks they find. Open school holidays in winter 10am-1pm every day and otherwise in winter 10-1 at weekends and public holidays. Spring and Summer open every day 10-4 except Christmas Day, Easter Friday and Anzac Day morning.

This experience is run by fantastic volunteers who are knowledgable about the mining process. They explain how the gold was mined and you get a chance to walk thru two levels of mine shafts. Completely recommend and fine for small children. People taller than 5 6 will spend their time in the shaft bent but it's not too long. Opportunity to learn gold panning as well for the kids

Coromandel Coastal Walkway

The Coromandel Coastal Walkway borders the northern Coromandel coastline between Stony and Fletcher Bays, following an old bridle path formed by early pioneers. It is a 10km (one way) hike that encapsulates the best scenery The Coromandel has to offer. It offers plenty of variety as it winds through regenerative native forest, farmland and rocky shoreline.

Reviewed By Acineto - Auckland Central, New Zealand

We did an overnight trip to do the Coastal Walk. We stayed in Fletcher's Bay Campground and the walk goes to the Stony Bay campgrounds, just follow the orange trail marks. The return trip took us about 6 hours at a fairly leisurely pace. I found that the walk itself was mostly easy with a light gradient. The start bit from Fletcher's Bay was quite an uphill and there was also a section near Poley Bay in the middle of the walk that had a steep downhill and uphill section. The views along the walk was very scenic. The views over the water to the various islands was really nice. There was also a lookout which had a nice view of the surrounds which included our destination, Stoney Bay. It was a bit of a climb to get to the lookout though, but it was short (about 5 minutes). The walk from Fletcher's Bay was on farmland so it was quite open. After that section, most of the walk was covered under the bush which was quite nice. The path was fairly wide, possibly due to that being a biking path too. There were also a few stops along the way between the campsites including Poley Bay and a lookout point. It was quite an enjoyable day tramp.

Hot Water Beach

This world famous beach at the tip of the Coromandel Peninsula contains two volcanic hot water springs that keep the water heated.

Reviewed By PerryTan

It was a unique experience for us to dig our own hot-water pool at the beach. 2 hours before and 2 hours after high tide, one can dig his own hot-water pool at the Hot Water Beach, at Coromandel Peninsula on the North Island of New Zealand. We chose a spot at the edge of the hot spring area so that the water is not too hot but nice and warm. As we came from overseas, we did not have our own spade, so we rented one from Hotties Beachfront Eatery for NZ$10. We also had our lunch there.

We drove the 309 Road to do the unique attractions on the way - Stu’s pigs, waterfall, the Waterworks and experience some gravel road! We ran out of time and couldn’t do the Kauri tree walk but it seemed very busy there! Highly recommend checking out this “back road” :)
