Red's Lounge

Reviewed By lyrix428 - Albuquerque, Nm

Was it much to look at? Nope
Was the music the best? Nope.
Was the vibe everything we thought it would be (and more)? You bet.
Great music from Howl-N-Madd Perry, great conversation with Charles tending bar, and just an authentic experience at an actual juke joint. What a night! Can't wait to return and spend more time in Clarksdale and at Red's.

The Rock & Blues Museum

The Rock & Blues Museum places emphasis on the music’s Mississippi roots, specifically Clarksdale, highlighting the contributions from Eddy Boyd, Little Junior Parker, Sam Cooke, Ike Turner, John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters, as well as early rockers like Elvis Presley, Bo Diddley, Andy Anderson and Conway Twitty.

Reviewed By MonroeLouisiana - Monroe

This is by some standards a small museum, but it is jam-packed with music memorabilia, especially vinyl records. In fact, it is probably one of the best rock/blues record collection ever. I was thinking that this collection is worth lots and lots of money. It doesn't take but 1-2 hours to go through the museum, but is well worth the $5 admission.

The Delta Blues Museum

Housed in the newly renovated Yazoo and Mississippi River Valley Railroad Depot, the museum presents the history of the Blues through photos, written word, artifacts and instruments.

Reviewed By Greg M - Warragul, Australia

Great museum featuring an extensive array of blues memorabilia, life stories, music and unique pieces such as Muddy Waters' one room house and Robert Johnson’s death certificate.

Due to copyright, no photos, recording of video of any kind are allowed but you had better have an hour or to spend there.

Parking is plentiful; there is a small gift shop and clean restrooms. You may even be accosted by “Razorblade” in the car park as you leave; a local identity and personable old gentleman who’ll spin you a yarn and try to sell you his CD.

Ground Zero Blues Club

Reviewed By Greg M - Warragul, Australia

Part owned by Morgan Freeman (who apparently frequents), the Ground Zero Blues Club we found to be more commercial than other venues (such as Red’s Lounge) but the music is fine and you’re in the company of like minded people.

Based on my experience, I’d advise eating beforehand as all six people at the table we were at were in agreeance as to the quality of the food. Rubber catfish and ultra dry chicken “tenders” was our personal experience but then again, it’s not a restaurant.

Take a texta (marker pen or whatever you want to call it) to record your attendance on a spare piece of wall, table, toilet etc if that rings your bell. Its walking distance from the town centre or, if you drive, parking is not a problem. Overall, a very enjoyable evening was had for the US$15 per person cover charge.

Stan Streets Hambone Art Gallery

Reviewed By PandyPandora

We happened on this place by chance on a Sunday in Clarksdale MS when we pulled up outside looking for the Rock n Blues museum (next door). It was a nice sunny day and Stan was sitting outside on the bench. Stan is such a friendly, welcoming person. He invited us in to have a look round and we chatted for a while. His artwork is distinctive with lots of bright colours. We purchased a couple of the prints as they are so different. There is live music here (Stan's band) some nights and there is a small stage and bar (Hopeless Case Bar). It's such a laid back place. It was interesting to hear about Stan, what a great life painting by day and playing music by night. He's also a cat lover and his two cats were in the gallery with him. It also transpired that he and my husband were at the same concert in London in the early 1970s! Small world.

We love Clarksdale! We try out different places, and Hopson was on our list. We weren't disappointed! It is a huge building, exploding with old south decor you'll love to check out. We had a delicious lunch of hotdogs, cucumber salad and chips, free of charge. A couple of drinks from the bar, and a visit with a new friend, made us happy touristas! We were lucky enough to catch some great live music with Seth Stroud. I'll tell ya, if you enjoy blues music, Clarksdale is your destination! Very unique venue, here at Hopson!

Most visitors would know the history of Robert Johnson selling his soul to the devil but it is still difficult to imagine this crossroads of 2 major highways being the stuff of legend. However as others have said, you can't come to Clarksdale and not make this pilgrimage.

Chilly Billy's Delta Bohemian Tour is an absolute must do for anyone travelling to Clarksdale. I've been there at least 6 or 8 times, and know a bit about the place, but Billy is on a whole different level. He gives an entertaining and highly informative view of the history of Clarksdale, but also on a deeper level, how it's people and the surrounding areas informed the culture and the blues. Whether it's walking through the Clark house, standing in a cotton field, or on the banks of the Mississippi, with Billy, it has so much more meaning than if you just did it on your own.

Billy is an eclectic character, a historian, a journalist, an intelligent man with a superb vocabulary and a great sense of humour. He's a great communicator and he knows his stuff. I took a group of university students on his tour and they all rated it as a highlight of our journey.

I cannot recommend Delta Bohemian Tours highly enough. Don't hesitate - just do it.

Deak has been playing the blues for decades. He also makes custom harmonicas which are second to none. On top of that he is a real nice guy. I hang our there every year during the Juke Joint Festival in Clarksdale......you never know who you are going to meet there.
