Cividale del Friuli (Friulian: Cividât, German: Östrich, Slovene: Čedad) is a town and comune in the Province of Udine, part of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of northern Italy. The town 135 metres (443 ft) above sea-level in the foothills of the eastern Alps, 15 kilometres (9 mi) by rail from the city of Udine and close to the Slovenian border. It is situated on the river Natisone, which forms a picturesque ravine here. Formerly an important regional power, it is today a quiet, small town that attracts tourists thanks to its medieval center.

As Unesco site… the Gastaldaga (gastaldaga is the residential district of the gastaldo or castaldo which is the local administrator on behalf of the Longobard/Lombard king, in a few words a stewardship) is one of the seven sites (the others are spread in other parts of Italy) that belong to the inscription Longobards in Italy, places of power. This area, easily recognizable since is the old part of the town (cobblestone streets, stone/brick buildings) the area where is located the Longobard temple (tempietto) inside the Monastery; the other main attractions of the town are within walking distance even if not part of the gastaldaga.
TEMPIETTO LONGOBARDO (Longobard Temple): Currently the wooden choir stalls are under renovation (those were addings during the late Medieval), so the structure is shown as originally is. Very fine artwork, extraordinary.
IPOGEO CELTICO (Celtic Hypogeum): Artificial underground caves, spooky. Free admission, need to ask for access keys at the temple/monastery reception desk.
CASA MEDIOEVALE: Rustic example of a medieval home. Is considered the oldest best conserved standing building in Cividale.
PONTE del DIAVOLO (devil’s bridge): just a bridge with the common devil’s related tale.
MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE (National Archaeological Museum): Displays lots of Longobard items also prehistoric, Roman, Medieval finds from all stages.
MUSEO CRISTIANO e TESORO del DUOMO (Christian Museum): Interesting to watch the original colors of the Altar of Ratchis, a Longobard king.
Would suggest to purchase the integrated ticket for 3 attractions (temple, both museums)
This is an interesting and historical town, founded by Julius Caesar in b.C. period (but dated back from prehistory) nice to stop and overnight (1 is perfect) if interesting in history, food and to be away from hoards of tourists.

Andateci, consigliatissimo

Lots of locally discovered roman artefacts, well presented with a fair amount of english narrative. It would be easy to spend 2 or 3 hours wandering around if you are a history buff.

After following detour signs which were not well-marked we found Il Tempietto Longobardo. It is a small Christian structure attributed to the Longobards in the High Middle Ages. Inside are some frescoes and a carving of 8 female saints. The Saints have a rather enigmatic quality to them.

The convent jump out directly from the medieval age. Perched on the hill above San Daniele, make you feel how it should be the life one thousand years ago.
The uphill to reach this fortified castle is really amazing. nine kilometers of steep and steep road. the convent is place of pilgrimage and along the road you can find people walking on the side of the road. The road itself is also a place of a famous car race "the rally of Friuli and of the Eastern Alps".
If you feel brave and strong you can try to climb the road with bicycle.
From the top of the mountain the landscape is very beautiful. Under your feet is streched all the plain of Friuli and on both your side there are the Alps. All around you the silence that you can find only in a place of meditation.
For work I have the lucky change of visiting the private places of friars inside the convent. Even if now is fully renovated the sensation of walking inside ancien walls still persist.
This is an amazing place of meditation and peace.

The people of "Cividat" who built this bridge were definitely assisted by the Devil! The magnificent structure is so beautifully positioned over the Natisone river. The best vantage point is behind the church on other side from Cividale. Walk behind the church closest to the bridge and you will find a lookout point with a black metal fence that extends over the cliff. This is where you will find the "money shot". Many lovers attach locks to this fence and write their names as graffiti on the rear church wall.

In a small room off the entranceway is the altar of King Ratchis who dedicated it to his father. King Ratchis ruled the Lombard Kingdom in the 700's. There is a display of how the altar was colored and also a screen that talks about how the original Lombards came to Italy. The altar is fabulous with very preimitive style figures. The rest of the museum has various fragments from the period and also a room with quite a few reliquaries. No photos.

In the charming medieval city Cividale del Friuli a medieval church is certainly to be found. The Duomo Santa Maria Assunta, the main church of Cividale, is built during the 15th and 16th century. The Duomo building is a bit severe and squat on the outside, but beautiful inside. It is astounding, that almost every Italian town can offer at least one beautiful church for inspection. Cividale is no exception. Stepping inside the Duomo is rewarded with some beautiful stained glass windows, an impressive altar, an antique instrument resembling an organ and more. To be recommended.

Nice little cave next to the river, many stories are behind this and what people really needed it for. The entry is free, although it's money offers after your visit are recommended. You get the keys from the bar/café next to it and not many people can go inside at a time.

From the very beginning, back in 1898, passion and curiosity led us to start the search for our own path, through the definition of our character and the pursuit of our unequivocal unique style. In our globalized age, we feel closer to the raising demand of knowledge and quality from both professionals and consumers. This demand is indeed a great opportunity for us to bring them closer to production, enhancing a wider knowledge as well as opinion sharing!
I drank the distillery of the distillery in the restaurant and immediately fell in love and decided to visit the distillery. We were treated very nicely with a detailed explanation of all types of grappa and liqueurs that they distilled, recommended for all lovers of good alcohol
