Two hundred and fifty years of history are preserved at the William Floyd Estate, which contains architectural features and artifacts from three centuries of American life. The Estate, which was donated to Fire Island National Seashore in 1965, is located on the mainland of Long Island in Mastic Beach, New York. The estate contains the ancestral house, grounds, and cemetery of the William Floyd family. William Floyd, a Revolutionary War general and a signer of the Declaration of Independence, was born in the house in 1734. Between 1718 and 1976, eight generations of Floyds managed the property and adapted it to their changing needs. The family used the house and property in different ways over the years. In colonial times, the Floyds ran a huge plantation; later, the family turned to business and politics, and the lands were used for outdoor recreational pursuits like hunting and fishing. The 25-room "Old Mastic House," the twelve outbuildings, the family cemetery and the 613 acres of forest, fields, marsh and trails all graphically illuminate the layers of history.
I realize that the tour guides are volunteers, but we were very disappointed. We took the tour with one other couple, at 2:30 pm on 9/10/16 and were disappointed with the guide. She did not speak clearly, she often spoke so rapidly that, considering her poor articulation, it was a struggle to understand the history and facts she was presenting. She seemed to be rattling off a bunch of memorized emotionless words in a monotone voice. Please try to provide better training for such important presentation of history.

This was an exciting afternoon for all on Cupsogue Beach. The more so that crashing water from the big surf continually cascaded over the high point of the beach as High Water approached. Walking in the surf, trying to stay upright as the undertow rushed backwards down to the sea, people watching and just sitting relaxing all contributed to an exhilarating experience.

Those 230 names on the memorial were etched in stone for those who travel to it to remember them. Sizable well planted and maintained well. A fitting memorial, in a perfect setting.

I have been to several national cemeteries and this one is great like so many others. It is very well taken care of and neat.
Notable graves include:
Lt. Michael P. Murphy, Navy SEAL (of 'Lone Survivor' fame).
WWII and Korean War fighter ace, Gabby Gabreski.
BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE NEARBY GRUMMAN MEMORIAL PARK
which has an A-6 Intruder and F-14 Tomcat on display in a nice little park environment.

What I love most about this place is that it's not really a "tourist" destination.. it's more of a hidden secret to those in the know. My wife and I made our pilgrimage this May but can't wait to go back specially when the leaves.. I can't even imagine the beauty of this place during the fall season

Great place to visit especially with children. A bit pricey so take advantage of any discounts they may offer ie AAA, AARP, Senior Thursday etc. Sea lion, penguin, and otter shows. Colorful and well maintained tanks from small fish to sharks. Great Butterfly house and bird aviary. Worthwhile entertainment. Parking is plentiful but does require walking a few blocks to reach parking lots.

This company and I had been communicating prior to the physical activity. Their customer service were accommodating, friendly, and sweet. I decided to rent a car because the train schedule was too inflexible for my schedule. When I arrived at the skydiving center, I realized that I came in too early. But this timing was perfect because there were more 4 participants arriving. We watched the safety show and signed the liability paperwork. We got prepped and ready to be on board. As I was on the plane, I glanced through the window and thought that the landscape near the beach looked so gorgeous. When it was my time to jump, I was with their instructor- Aish. The jumping 120mph was the most amazing feeling in the sky! He pulled his parachute. We gloated in the sky watching all the beautiful landscapes. We spinned around like a roller coaster ride in the sky. We landed nicely and safely! I'd recommend going to this skydiving center! I'd do it again and again in springtime / summertime! I already can't wait!

Nice time, spent about three hours there with almost three-year-old, but the place is tired. First off, eat before you get here because there's only one snack bar and the lines are long. Men's bathroom has actual changing table which looks old and one of the light bulbs which covers a toilet was missing. The green teacup doesn't spin and wasn't told that until after got on - so had to wait for next turn. Carousel doesn't play music and horses creak. Long line for pony ride so didn't even go on despite waiting in it a while. Parking is in a field - in 30+ years they couldn't pave an area? Again, my kid liked it here, plenty of opportunities to pet animals but go when they have a discount admission day, don't pay full price.
