Sitting along the Cloud Peak Scenic Byway in the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains, Buffalo is conveniently located between Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone National Park. The town itself is rich in frontier history, allowing visitors to step back in time to the days of cowboys and sheriffs. Have a glass of authentic sassafras in the saloon of the Occidental Hotel, right on Main Street, or head south of town and search out the Hole-in-the-Wall hangout of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Highway #16 is a lovely drive., but the stuff at Yellowstone is way cooler. By the way, Highway #16 is a much more gradual drive than taking Highway 14 or 14a. If you hear something about Crazy Women Canyon don't waste time there. it's located 15-20 miles west of Buffalo. The canyon is a shallow creek simply draining do the mountain side. It's in no way scenic. Again Highway #16 is a lovely drive, but not really a destination.

The hotel is a real gem and a worthwhile stop. It literally allows you to transport yourself in time, to an era now gone.... Beautiful displays of historic artifacts, terrific mood. Did not use the bar but wish we could! If ever there was a saloon worth spending time in (which we did not have, sadly) - this is it!

We happened to be there when they had a special function and it was free to the public plus they had old time skills that you could try outside the museum, i.e. tomahawk throwing; leather stamping; riding horses, etc. plus the Basque presenting their folk dancing. Should definately go through as the museum is very information and well kept.

My wife and I were visiting Buffalo for several days and we're interested in the wollen mill due to all the Basque sheep wagons we had seen in the hills. Owner gave a terrific 1 and 1/2 hour tour and explanation of their entire operation....MoreThank you so much for your kind words! We are happy to know you enjoyed your visit!

This is a great brewery, especially considering it is located in a town of fewer than 5,000 people. They have a nice patio for warm days and a cozy room for cold winter nights. The beer vats are in the same room as the bar so you can see exactly what they are brewing. My husband likes their IPA and I like the Wheat beer. The service is great and all the servers are very friendly.

4 Star Public Golf Course
Played 18 holes today with near perfect greens, fairways lush and full, all tees level including the ladies, driving range well developed, club house staff friendly, scenery outstanding and he signature par 3 hole was a par. A perfect day...all fro $103 for two including cart. The play was four hours. A real find in Buffalo. Hint: Play the elevated greens with an extra club length.

We are a full-service ice cream and fudge shoppe with an 18-hold miniature golf course, giant maze, gold panning sluice and horseshoe pits. Cool off in our air-conditioned dining room or enjoy the soothing sound of Clear Creak while sitting on our patio.
Luckily we spotted this place on our way back to the car having just eaten in The Bozeman Trail. We felt like we needed a sweet treat. Creekside has a really welcoming feel and very friendly service. I loved the cherry red fifties style parlor chairs and overall feel of the place. It was extremely clean, spotless in fact and it was wonderful to see what appeared to be the whole family working there. We really enjoyed our ice-creams and thought the waffle cones were particularly good. The fudge and other treats in the cabinet looked temptingly good as well. We sat outside and enjoyed watching a few people play mini golf. Definitely worth a visit, don't miss it as its tucked around the back of a hotel and The Bozeman.

We took a half-day ATV tour to the Bighorns and had a blast! We traveled 50 miles total with elevation gain about 6,000ft through a variety of landscapes: prairie, hills, Crazy Woman Canyon with ruggedly beautiful cliffs and whitewater, and alpine meadows with breathtaking views of mountain peaks. Scenery was amazing, and there was a lot of wildlife to witness. Awesome experience! Although the trail was quite rugged, and we had to cross a creek swollen with recent rainfall, it was not too difficult for beginners like us. The tours are well organized, and the owners are very nice people, extra friendly and helpful. Thank you Kody and Kim!

Lake DeSmet has long been a favorite spot for us to boat, fish and camp. They've recently upgraded and leveled more primative camp ($10) spots, and some sites now have electric ($15). Skiing, swimming, and boating (sailboats-power boats) is popular, but bank (trout) fishing can be excellent as well. The bays at the two dock areas on the south end are great for peddleboats and kayaks ... the lake itself can get rough REAL fast as storms come over the mountain to the West...be cautious when boating.
Memorial Day Fishing Derby awards great prizes; 4th of July is a popular time at the lake also.

When we seen the business sign I was wondering what they were selling. It turns out they make jellies, jams, hot sauces and steak sauces. We decided to purchased some products for gifts. I picked the raspberry jalapeño jam for myself. It's tasty but doesn't have a lot of heat.
