Burr Oak has a very nice nature center with animal and habitat exhibits. A children’s program was going on, and I get the impression that they do a lot with students. Great. Trails were well marked. Two shorter trails near the nature center are paved. Our visit was peaceful and lovely.

Blue Spring

If you are coming from Ellington, the sign for the Blue Spring is not very big and it just has on it "Blue Springs Trailhead". You will turn onto a gravel road opposite the sign and is 2 1/2 miles to get to the parking lot. It does have a steep grade and somewhat rough. We were in our mini-van and made it just fine. The walk from the parking lot to the Spring is 1/2 mile and easy. The color of the Spring is a beautiful deep blue and runs into the Current River. The Spring has been explored and mapped to a depth of over 300 vertical feet. I highly recommend a visit.

We were there for the Christmas tour on Sunday, December 3, 2017, and it was amazing. They had very knowledgeable Tour Guides, and beautiful musical entertainment. They had the three Morton Sisters, which sounded very much like the famous Andrew Sisters. Then in the room that had an organ and Steinway piano, they had a Tour Guide who could play both marvelously. The decorations were amazing also, but we were very impressed with how well everything was organized. We had our daughter and son in law from Honolulu with us, and they were most impressed with the entire operation

The volunteer staff is friendly but you never really know who is going to be there when you go. Some interesting structures to look at. A smattering of animals to observe. Good to get a general idea of what life was like for settlers back in the mid-1800s. Nothing too ground-breaking or thrilling but a decent way to kill an hour or so and maybe learn a little something. Okay for a one time visit.

While the concert itself was fabulous, the entry into the building was atrocious. We stood in line for over 30 minutes while the staff individually wanded everyone at the door. Where are the magnetometers? When the opening act started at 7:30pm, suddenly we were herded into the building without ANY security check. We were there in plenty of time, but the ridiculous wait to enter the building resulted in missing part of the opening act. Also, the seats are TOO CLOSE TOGETHER. Our seats were next to two heavyset people who needed additional space and made for an uncomfortable evening. Don't know that I would EVER return to this venue regardless of who might be performing. Also, better information regarding parking needs to be communicated prior to the event.

Took my 5 and 10 year old boys here for the Mountain Mates class on a Sunday morning. Class is an hour long for up to 4 kids ($15 per kid). We got lucky and it was just my two boys for an hour. This included a wonderful staff member that did the belaying for them. They loved it and it was great exercise. After the class they had free access to the bouldering wall too. The staff is very nice and knowledgeable, highly recommend Ibex. We may just have to get a membership.
