We stopped in to the museum on a Friday morning and for awhile had the museum to ourselves. Located in a portion of an Old Harvey House, the museum houses lots of memorabilia of the Mother Road and a nice shop with plenty of souvenirs if you need.
The staff was friendly and loved sharing some history of the route and Barstow.
There is a railroad museum in the same building. If you walk around to the front of the building which faces the railroad tracks, the Harvey House portion opens at 10:30 am and you can see a few cases of memorabilia on the Harvey Girls and the Harvey House. The ballroom is stunning. On the day of our visit, upstairs they had a Nasa exhibit. Well worth a stop.

This scenic desert area is good for hiking and other outdoor activities.
We were on our way to New Orleans and pulling our trailer. This was our first over night stop. The road in to truly bumpy but we got there with no problem. Campsites have BBQ, fir pit and covered table. It was to cold and windy to sit outside.
We did take a short hike. Beautiful rocks and canyon. We did have a great sunset.
It was very windy at night sandy I had a difficult time sleeping.

Tonight I visited an open air,drive-in movie theater for the first time in my life. It was fun to watch a new movie under the sky with the movie playing on a big screen and the FM radio having the sound. The movie was so-so but the experience was fun. This place only accepts cash but the fees and the food for sale are rather cheap. The movie start at 8 PM but the doors open - for cars - at 7:30. The service at the ticket desk and at the concession are both a bit slow but that is about the only negative I can say about this unique attraction. I hope they are able to keep it open for a long time to come.

Stopped in @ Barstow outlets
to do a bit of retail therapy on the way back to LA but was dissapointed at the variety. Also the food hall consisted of 1 small cafeteria that was over flowing with just 1 bus load of tourists.
You're better off to go to the Ontario Mills
shopping mall about an hour closer to LA. There is far more to choose from and a huge foodhall. It is all under 1 roof.

My son is a HUGE train fan. Even though the museum itself was closed (GOod Friday) he could still climb on the engines and cars outside. Really glad we made this stop for him.

It would have been nice to be able to see the building. It seems that after 4:00 visitors can only see the 'ballroom' and hallway. From our reading it seems that what is now called the ballroom used to be a formal dining room. I enjoyed seeing the exterior, light fixtures and the old photos but that was about all that we were able to see of the original Harvey House. The light fixtures are beautifl hammered copper but about half of them are reproductions. The young lady behind the desk was very nice and answered all of our questions.
There are some train cars that are interesting and a train museum.
We drove back across the tracks, turned left and went down by the high school to take photos and that was about it for the Harvey House. There are a lot of old Route 66 motel signs along the main road into town so there is that...

Whether you are looking for a place to take a rest, have some fun, use the restroom, engage in a history lesson, or collect souvenirs, we have it all here at Barstow Station. During your visit, you can grab great food, see interesting people, and stock up on supplies before hitting the road again. Barstow Station is home to more than 16 different vendors, including well-known names like McDonald's and Dunkin' Donuts. Best of all, we have Wi-Fi, clean and inviting drivers' lounges, a liquor store, and clean restrooms. Looking for lotto tickets? Our family-owned fun spot is the fourth largest seller in the state of California. We have even made some millionaires!
The Barstow station is always fun especially for the kids...but I personally enjoy all the great shopping and gift ideas...the Mac Donalds is several old rail road cars linked together..I have visited lots of times over the course of 16 years it's always new and different. ..love this place

Located inside the Barstow Outlet Mall, the CALIFORNIA WELCOME CENTER is a great place to stop for tourist information for the state of California. It is funded by the mall rather than the state of California and is full I travel brochures and information. I was spending the day in Barstow and a helpful young lady gave me some brochures and I picked up information for future trips in California.
It's a small office with some California souvenirs for sale. Also, if you plan to shop at the outlet mall, ask for the sheet of discount coupons. If you are traveling to/from Las Vegas-Los Angeles, this is a great area for some shopping or a meal.

After a weird visit to BLM office, first time ever told they won't give directions to petroglyphs as historic protected sites
The guy finally helped with directions and did recommend going to this little museum for books on areas we want to explore
The people here very, very helpful bought the books (Bill Mann)
There are wonderful artifacts, historical items, local interest, fossils and crystals on disolay
We went back to hotel to prepare hike itinerary to Inscription Canyon and because of books went back to buy "snake sticks"
Hiking sticks as beware rattlesnake country.
Great local museum and free!

This is an antique and consignment mall. The quality of items and displays are very nice and we were surprised to find it in Barstow. It was relaxing and interesting to look around even if we didn't buy anything this time.
