10 Things to do in Almagro That You Shouldn't Miss

September 24, 2021 Brandee Mangan

So many of Madrid’s buildings look like castles, you’ll think you’ve stumbled into a fairytale. Even City Hall is astounding, with its white pinnacles and neo-Gothic features. A self-guided architecture tour can begin by the great bear statue in the central Puerta del Sol. Wander by the fanciful Royal Palace before absorbing the natural beauty of Retiro Park, then visit one of the city’s many museums. You could happily cap off each day by nibbling on forkfuls of paella while sipping Spanish rioja.

With 340m2 facilities, it has 4 missions of different levels of difficulty, in addition to a new portable escape game for up to 15 people at the same time on the site of your preference. At EXIT® Madrid we give you the opportunity to play almost exclusively with your team without having to be in contact with other people other than your Game Master. We have implemented the necessary sanitary measures to prevent risk in the COVID-19 situation. Customers have disinfectant gel with a high concentration of alcohol throughout the facility; Likewise, the game rooms are sanitized after each session, focusing mainly on the elements that are manipulable. Located in the Chamberí neighborhood, it has 5 different rooms and 4 different escape rooms: " The Art Merchant 1932", "Laboratory 2010", "Death Penalty 1962" and "Cold War - Double Agent 1976". First timer when it comes to Escape Rooms, and especially first timer with Spanish Escape Rooms! The Escape Room we played was 'The Lab' which was both in Spanish and English so my friend and myself were able to play. The staff were so friendly and welcoming, our Game Master (Richard, the same name as me!) was engaging, supportive and really set the tone for the adventure we were about to embark on! The Lab was definitely challenging, requiring outside the box thinking! In particular The Lab required some basic level of arithmetic and patience! Whilst in the room, the Gamemaster will be able to see you and hear you on CCTV so if you are struggling, they will send hints to you to put you on the right track, which was super helpful! We escaped with just 4 minutes left to go, and what a rush to win! Thank you very much EXIT-Madrid, we will be back soon to tackle the next missions!

Interesting private collection, specially how the family today continues the legacy of (a) the art culture and preservation of it, and (b) inspiring others to do art and become artists.

Museo Sorolla

The Sorolla Museum preserves the original atmosphere of both home and study of the painter Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (Valencia, 1863 - Cercedilla, 1923). It houses the richest collection of his works, colourful paintings irradiating light and vitality. It is one of the more complete and best preserved artist homes remaining in Europe. The garden, also designed by himself, is a beautiful oasis in the city.

This small museum in a smart part of Madrid is a gem. Not crowded, cheap entry fee, excellent English signage and audio and peaceful. It is worlds away from the bedlam of the Prado and Thyssen. It is Sorolla’s house and garden and we spent a leisurely hour or so taking in the beauty and cleverness of this wonderful Spanish artist who specialised in ‘light’. Plenty of really good cafes close by for a coffee afterwards. Highly recommended.
