Just as the White Tower for Thessaloniki so its Lighthouse is the landmark or symbol of Alexandroupolis. The 27m high circular tower had been constructed by a French company in 1880, thus still in Ottoman days, but also at a time, when the harbour was being built. Usually in one's imagination Lighthouses are seen on promontories and capes, but here it is in the middle of a straight, pretty level coastline, thus in a quite unusual location.
The lighthouse cannot be visited, but it is in a nice area to hang around with several cafés, bars and restaurants,
Tripadvisor has two entries for this sight: 'Alexandroupoli's Lighthouse' and 'Lighthouse of Alexandroupoli', which naturally is the same.

We spent two full days walking the wonderful trails through beautiful pristine forest. The staff at the Information Centre were very helpful and friendly, and the hand-outs very well produced and written in good English. The signage on the trails was about the best we have ever experienced. The added attraction of a vulture feeding station was a unique bonus. We really had to tear ourselves away from this great place.

This is a small museum in the center of Alexandroupoli, made from the private effort of Giannakidis' family. The building itself is very interesting, neoclassical 1899 house! You will see various exhibits, traditional Thracian, and the story behind them. An hour's visit is fine! Go!

Really nice beach with sand that in the 1m from the sea shore in the water is absolutely perfect. The brach is organized by beach bars with averege prices. The water is increasing slowly so there is a big area that can be used playing with children or just enjoying the water even if you don t know haw to swim! Big like for this area!

Evros Delta is an important wetland on a national, European and international level. For many years it is a Protected Area, as it has a big value for wildlife and humanity. I had often seen documentaries on TV but the real thing is stunning ! Nature at its beauty with thousands of birds amongst which wild geese, flamingos etc. Our driver had a great sense of humour and the boat ride was incredible !

On big Dimokratias Avenue is since 2011 the 'Istoriko Mouseio Alexandroupolis', for which - with funds from SNF (Stavros Niarchos Foundation) - had been constructed a modern and quite attractive building.
Entrance fee is 2 Euros. On the ground floor are temporary Exhibitions like paintings by local artists. On the second floor is the collection by researcher Eleni Filippidi, who dedicated part of her life to the study of the fascinating subgroup of the ethnic Greek Sarakatsani, who led a life as transhumant shepherds in most of the southern Balkan Mountains until the 1950's.
Here can especially be seen dresses of these people, but also everyday tools and a lot of information, but only in Greek - as everything in the whole museum, which thus cannot be called very tourist-friendly.
In the 3rd floor is the History part, with old photos of mainly Alexandroupolis or - as it was called in Ottoman times: Dedeagaç. There are also some finds from antiquity and many interesting information boards about the towns past. All in all a good and worthwhile to visit museum, especially if one understands and reads Greek.

The buliding of the "Zariphios" educational Academy is one of the most beautiful buildings of Alexandroupoli. The financing of its construction was made by the benefactor of the Greek nation, the Ottman-Greek Yorgo Zariphi.
