Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area

A 90-mile stretch of riverside park through scenic valleys and gorges: great for canoeing and kayaking.

We hiked the Angel Falls trail. It was a 4 mile round trip hike. The trail ran beside the river. It was an easy trail that took about 90 minutes including exploring the rocks and rapids in the river. The falls were big rapids in my opinion rather than a waterfall but it was still a great view and enjoyable hike.

Cordell Hull Birthplace and Museum State Park

Reviewed By TravelinMamax3 - Jamestown, Tennessee

If you're hanging out in the Upper Cumberland and you're up for a fantastic history lesson, spend an afternoon at the Cordell Hull Birthplace!

Cordell Hull was a US Representative, US Senator, and the longest serving Secretary of State in American History. He is considered the Father of the United Nations, and was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 1945.

Once at the park, you will find a small, but extremely well curated museum of mostly authentic artifacts. There is also a replica of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Outside again, you will find the recreated 19th century Hull homestead, which consists of two log cabin style rooms, full of period-authentic details.

On occasion, you can find special events and ranger-guided activities. Over the years, we've gotten to know Elvis the Corn Snake very well. Inside the Ranger Building, there are usually other reptiles and small animals available during educational presentations.

Pending the time of year you visit, there are often gardens and flowers throughout the homesite.

When you are done perusing the history, be sure to take the Bunkum Cave Trail across the street. The entire loop trail is rated a moderate, but easy to follow 2.25 total distance. Bunkum Cave is a fun destination, and there are several overlooks along the path as well.

The Cordell Hull Birthplace is located very near the Dale Hollow Lake area. There are several destinations of interest in and around the city of Byrdstown. There are multiple marinas, parks, and restaurants, many offering lakeside dining and boat and jet ski rentals.

We spent a long weekend at Pickett State Park recently in one of the park chalets. It was a very nice and relaxing weekend. The chalet is basic but has everything you would need to step away from the day to day for a while....MoreThanks for spending the weekend with us! We are glad you enjoyed the chalets. We are in the process of updating our cabins and villas and hope that you will come back and spend some unplugged time with us again soon.

Unfortunately, we picked the wrong time of year to visit this park. A warning to all: do not attempt to visit the first Thursday-Sunday of August unless you like yard sales. We did not realize it was the weekend for the world's longest yard sale (Michigan to Georgia) on Hwy 127. It took almost two hours to travel 41 miles. This would have been ok if we could have visited the state park once we arrived but it was filled with vendors. The visitor center was very nice and we drove the back road to the cemetery but the rest was overshadowed with junk and hundreds of people. Very disappointing.

It is a hidden jewel on beautiful Dale Hollow lake , not far from Cookville TN or Bowling Green Ky and other Central KY and Central TN destinations. It is one of the best kept State golf courses I have ever played on and is well maintained . The Lodge is modern with an outstanding dining facility and accommodations overlooking Dale Hollow lake.
