Abilene boasts a proud military history, having been home once to a U.S. Army base and later a U.S. Air Force base, which remains its primary employer. The city boasts numerous green spaces as well as an impressive zoo representing hundreds of species of animals. Look around and there is always something to do, with two annual rodeos, several outdoor festivals and conferences throughout the year.

Most recent visit to the Paramount was to see the performance of August, Osage County. Enjoyed the play but had difficulty hearing some of the dialogue at times. Microphones were not well placed. Seating was good. I have visited the Paramount Theater many many times in the years I have lived in Abilene. I always enjoy the twinkling stars in the ceiling and the moving clouds. I am so glad it was rescued and restored rather than being torn down. As long as there are performances or old movies to attend, I will be there.

I have been to several zoos and Abilene’s is the perfect size with so many wonderful animals. I have teenagers, who still enjoy the zoo, but we take younger cousins to the zoo when they come to visit. It isn’t too big that the 2, 3, 4, and 5 year olds get bored or tired. The way zoo guests can interact with the giraffes by feeding them is so much fun. The enclosures for the animals are just beautiful with improvements being made all the time. Our family highly recommend this zoo for people in Abilene and those visiting our city.

We just happened upon this place while travelling in the back country past Abilene. Well laid out and documented, it represents the ebb and flow of the tide of civilization. Changes in technology, steam, railways, weapons, and the political system meant that places like this either flourished or....disappeared!

Jacob's Dream is a statue/monument just inside the main campus entrance at Abilene Christian University. It depicts/represents the verses in Genesis 28. It is very well done. Being familiar with the bronze Jacob & the Angel depicting Jacob's Struggle with the Angel on the campus of the University of Scranton, I really wanted to see this one. It does not disappoint. I researched it, and it is so very well done. It is listed as one of the most photographed sites in Abilene. The sculpture is really worth taking the time to visit. If you have more time, walking around the sculpture will be time well spent.

We thought this would be a short stop but ended up spending 3 hours visiting all 3 floors. The photos, displays and personal accounts of the battalion, the battles and life during the war were very well presented. We learned a lot. Well worth the visit.

Get your culture-on and learn a thing or two about Texas history, art and photography. A lot of care and dedication by museum curators provides for a nice break from the Texas heat. Enjoyed our quick visit.

We were lucky enough to see 20 years of the best children's books illustrations. It doesn't take much time to see everything but if you are passionate about literature you will remember this for a lifetime. The staff is very friendly and didn't kick us out just because we were there past closing time. Afterwards you can walk across the street for some terrific chocolates that will fuel your walk through a small park with statuary of Dr. Seuss characters.

I just happened to find this cute winery when I Googled to see if Abilene had a winery by any chance. This was a fun and relaxing winery. The inside is a little small, but the patio is great. We had a great time sitting on the patio under the arbor. It was windy the day we were there, but we still enjoyed it. I noticed there are warmers on the patio too for the cooler months. We enjoyed it and we'll go back. We had the Bullfrog wine and the Pear wine. Yum!
