Holland's most modern city began as a fishing village in the 13th century. It was developing into an industrial and trading power when German bombers destroyed the city center and harbor in 1940. However, Rotterdam's unique architecture now brings many visitors to bike around this urbane, cosmopolitan city. Old Dutch-style houses can still be found in historic Delfshaven, from where the pilgrims set sail in 1620. Cultural offerings from summer's carnival to classical music give Amsterdam competition.

Considered an architectural work of art, Rotterdam's imposing bridge that is shaped like a harp soars over the largest harbor in Europe.
The iconic Erasmus bridge, nicknamed “the Swan”, crosses the wide river Nieuwe Maas in Rotterdam. It offers a great opportunity to take a city walk and reach out from the industrious North shore to the bubbling “Kop van Zuid” and the gentrified Katendrecht peninsula.

The Kop van Zuid is a superbly gentrified former docklands area very much in the center of Rotterdam- can be reached by foot easily via the iconic Erasmus bridge. The centerpiece is no doubt the monumental Holland America Lijn building, now hotel New York. It is surrounded by stunning highrise architecture such as De Rotterdam and the Montevideo buildings. A very nice and arty city park (featuring eg. the fabulous Lost Luggage Depot artwork) sits at the western waterfront. A must see in Rotterdam!

The reason why this 1953 statue and its sculptor Ossip Zadkine is so well appreciated by the people of Rotterdam is it captures exactly the feelings of the people after the Nazi bombing of the heart of the city in 1940. Powerlessness and desperation about the bombs and the devastation they caused. They took our heart away. The boy from Smolensk (Belarus) who became French citizen Zadkine never experienced bombings as he escaped to the USA in time in 1941, but still his strong sense of empathy helped him to create the sculpture. His style is clearly influenced by cubism and he may also have been inspired by Picasso's 1937 painting of Guernica, another testament to Nazi cruelty.

Trompenburg Gardens & Arboretum is the green pearl in the city of Rotterdam. Throughout the year admiring visitors come and enjoy exploring the gardens. Nature’s beauty changes magically with each new season. This former country estate covers 20 acres and boasts a magnificent collection of plants that includes very old beeches and oaks, 700 varieties of rhododendron, more than 100 varieties of holly, the Dutch National Collection of Hostas and countless others. Refreshments can be had on the sunny terrace at the entrance or in the cosy tea room in De Uithoek where they also serve lunch.
This is also Rotterdam! A beautiful and well maintained botanical paradise. It is accessible in a wheelchair and plenty of resting places. The tea room has a great menu and the food is surprisingly diverse and very good. The cakes are delicious!

We had a great time in this Zoo. We spend over 4 hours and didn't get to see it all. Naturally everyone has its favorites. We liked the gorillas that where inside with the warm weather and the hyenas chewing on bones. We went to see the feeding of the sharks and the tigers. Probably we, and most visitors, expected too much of it as the animals got bored soon so there was not much to see. Great lay out by continent so you have a great mix of different species (birds, mammals,...) in every continent. The food in the restaurant are typical dutch fast food options. I tried a 'broodje kroket' that really missed taste, with or without the accompanying sauce. Broodje Unox (hot dog) had the same problem. Perhaps best to take a picknick with you. Great bakeries (like Koekela) in Rotterdam. We came with an Uber from the centre for 7 euro which is cheaper than the 3,50 euro/person for a two hour ticket for the bus as you will take longer than two hours in the Zoo. Probably the same with a taxi.

This place is amazing. The time, expense, effort and expertise that has gone into recreating much of Rotterdam and surrounding areas is unbelievable. Prices were reasonable and we spent over two hours looking at the displays. They are now building a miniature Great Britain, so you can see how much work goes into model making. Can't recommend highly enough.
