One of the world's finest painted prehistoric caves.
The visit to see these awesome 29000-year-old examples of Cro-Magnon rock paintings is very well organised. Groups of about 30-40 are conducted into the cave with a knowledgeable guide who explains the techniques and outlines the individual animals, which are not always easy to pick out. The visit was not hurried – over an hour - and we got a good view of all the accessible art-works. The cave also has superb geological features, worth a visit in their own right! The Museum shows a selection of artefacts and a well-produced film of the caves, including illustrating some drawings in inaccessible sections.

The Gouffre de Padirac, the most famous cave in Europe, is considered as one of the most interesting geological sites in France. After a vertiginous descent, by lift or stairs, of 103 metres, you embark on a boat trip along the subterranean river with spectacular views on the galleries. That's when you discover the "Grande Pendeloque" - a gigantic stalactite of 60 metres high - hanging by a string, it appears to admire itself in the "Lac de la Pluie". You then walk towards the "Lac des Gours" or the "Salle du Grand Dôme" with its 94 metres high vault.
The tour of the caves and underground river is a fascinating, educational, awe-inspiring and reasonably priced must-see in the Dordogne area of France

La Foret des Singes A magical moment, a unique encounter ! An exciting walk amongst more than 150 free roaming Barbary Macaques. No bars, no cages to hinder your view. A direct contact with this amazing species. Feeding talks throughout the day.
We had an ok trip to Rocamadour, but on our way home stopped at the Monkey forest. I am so pleased we did as it made the trip worth it!

Jean François Champollion, the decipherer of Egyptian hieroglyphics, was born in Figeac in 1790. The Museum of Writing takes the visitor on a journey following Champollion’s footsteps that gives them the opportunity to take part in the adventure of the written word and consider its place in our future world.
This museum is worth a trip to France. The history of writing, and the work of Jean-Francois Champollion, is displayed here in a highly sophisticated and polished manner with explanations in French and English that are erudite and complete. You can, and I hope to, spend days, soaking up the information that accompanies the artifacts.

The massive fortress-like facade does not really suggest what awaits you in the interior--a magnificent nave with two domes, one painted with ancient frescoes, and a plethora of tiny chapels all around the aisles and the apse. On the exterior, the north (?) portal is really magnificent with impressive sculptures above the door and floral decorations around the arches. The stone used for the architecture is alternate courses of black and white limestone, enhancing the sculptural decoration. Off the south side of the church, you open the door into an amazing cloister with elaborate flamboyant Gothic decoration.
