Perched on the top of a volcanic rock which serves as a pedestal, the fortress of Polignac is the birth place of one of the most illustrious families in the history of France. The castle is not only an extraordinary sight in the landscape, it also offers a unique panoramic view of the surrounding region. Walking around the ruins of the fortress along a fascinating trail, visitors will discover a place of exceptional interest.
Not a lot of recent reviews recently on TA so I wondered if it might be quiet. Wrong. The fortresse stands out from whatever direction you approach so there were quite a good number of visitors the mid-week morning that we visited. Excellent self-guided tour and the surrounding countryside is as beautiful as you are likely to see. You need a token to activate the gate which you buy in the village from the billeterie opposite the church. In September the site is open right through the day but the sole employee in the billeterie takes lunch from noon to 13.30. Definitely recommended!
