Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge

Thirteen offshore islands designated as wilderness areas offer spectacular and rare viewing for birding and wildlife enthusiasts.

Nice paddle out Refuge from the beach kayak rental. We paddled to the north end of the island and hiked to the old cemetery. Nice trail not buggy, but they say they can be bad. The old cemetery is interesting. AS long as the tide is up you can continue on around the island and cut through the middle. Its shallow and if the tide is low you will need to paddle all the easy around the island or return the same way you came. You will find the backwaters of Cedar Keys to be very shallow and high tides are needed to be able to get around in them on a kayak or boat. Its VERY pretty paddling in the mangroves and the Cedar Key water tower is visible for a reference point.

Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge

One of the largest unspoiled estuarine systems in the U.S.

Reviewed By Exploration765958 - Saint Cloud, United States

We were in the area for a quick "one night truck tent" adventure, and before setting up camp we found the "Lower Suwannee Nature Drive" which was absolutely beautiful 9 mile drive through the Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge. It's a scenic drive with so many places to stop and get photos of nature. During the drive you will notice a BAT HOUSE and at Sunset the adult bats head out for insects and return back to feed their young. Although we did not see that due to the time we were there, I have seen many reviews on Trip Advisor of folks who have wittnessed it. So if you are looking to take a trip in Nature, this place is for you.
