Part of the hike from Zarnesti to Curmatura chalet, Zarnesti gorges (Prapastiile Zarnesti) are quite spectacular. They tend to be very busy over the weekends, especially during summertime. The trail follows the stream through the gorges for a few kilometres. It's a good activity for a hot summer day, as the trail is shaded by tall rocks. During summertime, the hikers need to pay an entrance fee (5 lei, about 1 Euro).

St. Nicholas is more than a church. It is an Orthodox Cathedral as well as a Museum Complex as it also represents the First Romanian School, taught in Romanian in times where schooling was regarded as a luxury and subjects were mostly presented in French, German or Latin. St. Nicholas is an amazingly beautiful monument in itself and while in Brasov, I highly recommend stopping for a visit.

Libearty Bear Sanctuary is the biggest brown bear sanctuary from Europeand has the largest surface in the world. Here, 75 bears found a nice home in this 5 stars welfare facility. Here you can see happy bears in their natural environment, after a bad life in circuses and zoo cages. The tours are guided by trained animal welfare experts and the visitors can see brown bears really close.
This was the highlight of my visit to Romania. It was absolutely amazing to see brown bears so close up. We watched a video at the start which was heart breaking, as it showed the treatment of the bears before they arrived at Libearty. After the video, it was even more special to see the bears outside playing. They now have loads of space to roam. There are also deer, donkeys and wolves at Liberty, though the bears are the main attraction. This isn’t a zoo so there are some rules in place for the comfort of the bears. For example, you must stay with the group at all times and be quiet. The staff were apologetic when enforcing these rules and were extremely polite. There’s a gift shop where you can adopt a bear and buy souvenirs. For such a small shop, they had a good selection to choose from (magnets, teddy bears, pens, T-shirts, etc). Note that no children under 5 are allowed. This is clearly stated on the website, but one man was very rude about it on the day when his kids were refused. This rule is for the children’s own safety and to be honest, I imagine it to be pretty distressing for them to watch the video about the treatment of the bears. I’m so glad Libearty exists and thank everyone involved for their work with the bears ????????

This is the heart of the city. With so many nearby restaurants and cafes, this is a vibrant area with locals and tourists. You can have a seat and watch people carrying bags from their shopping. Just around the corner from Old Town is the historic Black Church.
