My wife and I came to Atlantic beach for a belated honeymoon due to covid. I have kayaked many times and my life and my wife never has. We decided to do the tour and couldn’t be happier. Amazing from first point of contact until we left. I usually find atleast one negative to say in my reviews and I honestly cannot think of one. We will be back.

Island Express Ferry Service

Island Express Ferry Service is the ONLY ferry service out of Beaufort and Harkers Island, NC that is authorized by the National Park Service to drop passengers off at Shackleford Banks and Cape Lookout. Shackleford Banks is the southernmost barrier island in Cape Lookout National Seashore. Shackleford Banks is a pristine island with one of the best shelling beaches in North Carolina. Famous for the wild banker horses that roam the uninhabited island, this is one of the few places in the eastern United States where wild horses can still be seen. Enjoy the beauty and tranquility of Cape Lookout, famous for the Cape Lookout Lighthouse Station. While you are there, take time to collect some of the most beautiful shells in the world. Bird watch, swim in the ocean, climb the lighthouse, or ride our famous Beach Shuttle. There is something for everyone to enjoy on this island paradise. Island Express Ferry Service is an authorized National Park Service Concessionaire. Although our name has, at times, been confused with smaller services that do not go to Shackleford Banks or Cape Lookout, there is only one ISLAND EXPRESS FERRY SERVICE. Be sure to add an S for Services when looking for us online.

Olde Beaufort Farmers Market

This is an outdoor rain or shine market which gathers under the old live oaks on the courthouse square in the center of Beaufort on Saturday mornings from 8:30 until 1:00. Farmers and fishermen gather under tents filled with fresh, locally grown vegetables, farm-raised meats, eggs, honey and other homegrown products. Bakers share golden, delicious baked goods: croissants, morning buns, tomato pies, cupcakes, quiches, and cookies to name a few. Fishermen offer fresh, locally caught shrimp, fish, crabs, and other seafood. And, artists and craftspeople fill their tents with handmade work from their studios, available for all who appreciate quality, unique creations. Local musicians provide entertainment to those who stop to linger with breakfast or lunch from our weekly food truck, and local non-profit organizations share their work with the public. There's even a Kids' Program with art and other activities for the younger set. Be sure to include the OBFM in your trip to Beaufort.

While family and friends were out at sea participating in a fishing tournament in neighboring Morehead City, I decided to venture across the bridge and explore Beaufort's Farmers Market in search of gifts for upcoming Mother's Day. Not only did I find incredible gifts for all the mothers in my life -- ranging from colorful pottery to freshly roasted coffee beans to homemade cosmetics -- I came away with much more than a few delightful presents. I was struck by the energy of the Beaufort community. The market was bustling with people of all ages -- some who had just finished up a yoga class on the adjacent lawn. I enjoyed talking with the vendors, artists, local growers, bakers and craftspeople as they spoke with passion about their businesses. I even got to shake hands with the Mayor who had just come from a ribbon cutting ceremony for the town's new bridge. The market was ideally located in the heart of town next to the Courthouse. Congrats to the people of Beaufort for doing a great job revitalizing a historic foundation of their community and making it a vibrant part of today’s culture. Although from out of town, I truly was made to feel at home. My only regret was how quickly the morning flew by -- I realized with a jolt at 12:45 pm that I only had 15 minutes left to buy a couple more presents before the 1 pm closing time!

Rachel Carson Reserve

The Rachel Carson component of the North Carolina Coastal Reserve & National Estuarine Research Reserve is located between the mouths of the Newport and North rivers in southern Carteret County, directly across Taylor's Creek from the historic town of Beaufort. It is accessible only by boat (local ferry vendor, private vessel, or canoes and kayaks).

Beautiful preserve and many ways to access it. We used Waterbug Tours which took us along the shore with a great narration on the history, flora and fauna. We saw a couple of wild horses up against some rees. Earlier we'd seen two horses on the beach from the town docks. Kayakers have multiple places to go ashore. Other ferries will drop you off for an hour or more of exploring. If you do that, bring sun screen and buy spray.
