Clancy's Athy

Reviewed By robertZ1852JM - Athy, Ireland

Many years ago I used to be a regular for the Thursday night traditional music session. Now I seldom get the chance as Thursday nights are taken up with other things but I was there recently and its as good if not better than ever! Excellent pints and authentic music representing a living tradition. It is advisable to go early to make sure of a seat in the back room where the music is. The front bar is a good old fashioned pub with a decent clientele ( not greatly improved by my presence ) and, most importantly , great pints of Guinness.

BargeTrip

Experience the Grand Canal the way it was intended and take a leisurely cruise on a restored traditional Canal Barge. Cruises operate from Sallins Harbour which is only 30 minutes from Dublin city center by train and is located just off the M7 motorway. The barge is available for private charter for groups any day of the week and operates up to 6 scheduled cruises daily at weekends. Kildare is known as the Canals County with 120 km of still waters crossing its landscape and linking its towns and villages. The Captain will give you a unique insight into the life and history of the Grand Canal as it winds its way through the county Kildare countryside. You can choose a short one hour cruise to the Leinster Aqueduct where the canal crosses over the River Liffey, or a 2.5 hour cruise through Digby Lock where you'll experience the workings of an eighteenth century canal lock. There's bar service on-board serving a selection on locally brewed craft beers and in summer there are two 1.5 hour evening cruises to McCreevey's Lock. Afterwards you can enjoy a meal in one of the waterfront restaurants in Sallins village. The M.V. Amo is licensed by the Department of Transport and Tourism for 12 passengers. There’s an outdoor seating on the open decks at the bow and stern and it has a very comfortable interior with ample seating, toilet facilities and a wood-burning stove. Scheduled cruises operate from March to October and advance booking is essential.

Just spent a very enjoyable 1.5 hours in rye river brewing co. Simon the host for the tour is one of the nicest people you’ll meet and is very passionate and knowledgeable about the company and the beer. If you have any interest in beer I would highly recommend a tour. I can’t praise Simon enough. He made the tour extremely enjoyable.

Celtic Rider

Reviewed By kacnelson1219 - Moberly, United States

We have traveled most of the US and Canada on Harley-Davidson’s but Paul convinced us the BMW GS1200 was what would work best for us in Ireland. He was absolutely right as the narrow twisting roads we would encounter was best suited for this motorcycle. Paul and his team made this the most memorable trip we ever experienced. Once you arrive at Celtic Rider you will choose your gear and Paul goes over the motorcycle with you so you are familiar with he controls and that it fits you correctly, the seats are adjustable to lower you down to get better footing as the GS is a tall bike compared to the Harley’s we are familiar with. The next step was the orientation class on rules of the road in Ireland, not having ridden on a he left side of the highway and doing round- about clockwise was a little intimidating but Paul made it easy to understand with the simple phrase Look Right Stay Left!! He then leads you on a short ride so you can experience what you just learned ,by the second day of the tour it was all second nature and no problem at all. I could go on and on about our experience in Ireland but I will leave it at this, if you could do only one fantastic trip of a life time pick the 14 Day Wild Atlantic Way tour with Celtic Rider you will never experience a more beautiful country with people that are so friendly that you think you are visiting family. This should be on everyone’s bucket list and we hope to be returning soon.

We are massive advocates of supporting sustainability, fairly traded and local produce, our ethically sourced coffee which will always be Specialty Grade or above is roasted in Naas. We are currently working with four bakers and producers for our delicious accompaniments who are all based in Kildare town.

The huge chocolate squares I had with my excellent coffee. Due to Covid 19 restrictions you may enter and purchase take away products only so no time to sit and chat. Even so you are greeted with the lovely aroma of coffee and good food causing you to salivate. Maybe not everybody does but there is something about the smell of freshly ground coffee and the Barista banging away the old grinds and preparing a new cup of coffee for you. Inside as you wait in a small queue (3 meters apart and all that) you get a lovely sense of peace and calm minus the buzz of people sitting and eating etc. While it is strange to go to a coffee shop and do take away food and drink it is still a lovely experience. Added to the eternal patience of the staff and it is not easy to understand us customers in our masks no matter how trendy some of them are. Questions regarding Gluten Free products are welcome and unlike a lot of coffee shops they have a good range so my wife was more than happy. Your cake is put into a nice little square box not a shiny plastic one. More classy I think myself and it makes you feel like you had a better experience than coffee at a Petrol station on the motorway. There are a few seats scattered around on the street outside and it is a nice place to sit on an Autumnal day watching the buses come in and go out and people pushing buggies with babies and normal life going on. Yes there is nothing square about this coffee shop. Good food, coffee, friendly staff and great service.

A very interesting place, educational as well as a place to enjoy peaceful family time. 2 for 1 ticket price through the Irish Heritage leaflet made the cost exceptional and well worth the visit. The horses are so well looked after, the information is interesting and the grounds are immaculately kept. The Japanese garden is an added bonus, peace and tranquility await, a visual piece of art in every corner, vibrant colours abundant in every space, purity at its best! The cafe is lovely, serving delicious food, especially the cake/dessert selection. Worth a visit if in Co Kildare.
