10 Things to do Good for Big Groups in Muenster That You Shouldn't Miss

November 16, 2021 Hana Mouser

Often overlooked by English-speaking tourists, Muenster is a small university city near the Dutch border. The Altstadt (old town) was rebuilt after WWII to resemble its medieval predecessor, and you'll find most museums and historic attractions are here. For trendy clubs and restaurants, head over to the Hafen ("harbor") district.

Historisches Rathaus Munster

This 12th-century building is where the Westphalian Peace Treaty was ratified.

With a typical Gothic façade, Muenster's town hall is a mid-14th century edifice. The characteristic gable was rebuilt true to the original in the 1950s. In 2015, it was awarded the European Heritage Label as the "Site of the Peace of Westphalia", which seems to be such a well fitting name for a place like Muenster, mainly a University and residential city where the number of bicycles exceed the number of people and where the old town is beautifully surrounded by a park.

Been to a lot of churches and monasteries across Europe and this one is well worth a look. Despite the external renovations inside is immaculate and very inspired. The astronomical clock is outstanding and the structure itself very imposing. My only criticism was the beggars at the door....!!

LWL-Museum fur Naturkunde Westfalisches Landesmuseum mit Planetarium

We had some time to spend whilst in Münster ( close to where we live) and decided to visit the museum, not having been there for years. My family has visited here twice now and not yet seen the museum in its entirety. It's really well-curated and organized into several sections, including dinosaurs and how they are related to birds, the natural history of the region, naturalist expeditions across time, and an amazing special exhibit on nature in the darkest regions of our planet--the deep sea and caves. Though most of the explanatory material is in German only, the visual displays and hands-on exhibits still make sense and inform non-native speakers. The museum also has a planetarium which we didn't visit this time but I believe is also worth visiting. All in all, an interesting place to visit.

A fantastic historical church. The iron cages up the church tower are spooky - but the history behind it is fascinating.
