This gorge + valley are so colourful in autumn. We drove there and it wasn't hard to get a parking spot. The whole valley was dotted with red, orange and yellow and very pretty. I found the autumn leaves here are more in red than other places in Tohoku Japan. (Most places we've been to are mostly yellow to orange in shade.) We hike down the valley and back up. It's really one of the highlights of our trip.

Absolutely gorgeous. The weather is very variable and changes quickly - the first day we went (parking at the main parking lot) had a sunny forecast but when we got there the entire mountain top was covered in thick fog and it was pouring rain so we couldn't see it at all. It was also very windy and approaching freezing in October. The next day we hiked over from the Zao Onsen Ropeway and the weather was perfect although still jacket weather. Very glad we made the second attempt because it's fantastic - the unreal color of the lake along with the alien landscape.

There is a Sakura festival that takes place at Funaoka Castle Park, closer to the Shiroishi River, which is located atop a hill. Sakura trees are lined along the pathway to the hill. Walking along the flower-lined pathway to the top of the hill is a beautiful journey. There is also a trolley available that takes you to the top of the hill. This park is the best place to have a bird view of the lined up Sakura along the Shiroishi River.

Worth a visit. You will enjoy the treasure museum as well as the newly renovated temple main hall (2006). There is a lot to see here, so you will need about 30-60 minutes for this temple. For more, check `hiddenjapanguide.com`

If your kids can walk by themselves, the place will be good for you because the Zoo locates a mountain. They can run and walk all through the park to see so many animals. The Zoo is not huge place but big enough for young kids and family. Walking shoes recommended. Takes 30 minutes by taxi from near Sendai station. Next to the Zoo has amusement park, too. That is why if your kids have energy to visit there, it will be another fun event for your kids.

As one of 日本三景,Matsushima is just 40 minutes from Sendai, taking JR Senseki Line to Matsushima Kaigan Station from JR Sendai station. Another great getaway from city life. Don’t miss it if you are in Tohoku region.

From Sendai Station you'll be looking at a thirteen minute taxi ride, twenty minute bus ride, or as I did, a thirty to forty minute walk. I do the walk, because it's the things that you might see along the way, what you might miss out on, if you take a cab or bus. Just my personal preference. Part way on your adventure upwards, you'll see a temple off to the left, to the right is a walking path and bathrooms. Go in through the gates of this temple. It's small, but it's really nice. (free) Now for Zuihoden Temple. I believe the entrance fee was around $12. Just be ready for a walk up a good incline. But the scenery while walking up is just amazing. When you get to the steps to start your incline, there is a box with walking sticks, to help with your accent. As you're walking upwards, you'll see huge tall trees that go up forever, on either side of the path/ stairs. There are a lot of places to walk around, with different shrines and temples to see. It is a very calming feeling, when you walk around here. You can also grab a drink at the vending machine, in the parking lot before you go into the grounds, or on your way back down. If you don't mind a bit of walking, I don't think you'll be disappointed. It was simply beautiful to see.
