Instead of going to the Torre del Paine like everybody else, we choose to explore this much less known parc, and it is an emerald of nature! Very good hiking paths, not crowded and so many things to explore!!!

This is a wonderful place. It's a private nature reserve where the owner will give you a tour of the special forest. You must ring first to arrange a time. It costs 10,000 pesos and is worth every penny. You learn so much about the forest and its wildlife. The owner has a wealth of knowledge about the trees, geology, flora and birds. You find it at km 15 on the road down to Cucao. (20 minutes from the Hostal Palafito- also highly recommended!)

This royal blue lake is Chile's largest and South America's fourth largest lake.
We spent almost a day driving around the lake and discovered a stunningly beautiful part of chile. The view is constantly changing: mountains, volcanoes, lake, forests, green meadows, gently rolling hills and charming little towns like german influenced Frutillar or Puerto Octay. A must do when you are in the area.

Snow-capped and shaped like a perfect cone, this striking volcano overlooks a beautiful lake.
We'd heard that it's often cloudy and many days you can't see the peak, but we saw it all day long. In fact, we drove up the winding road to the ski lift which we took all the way up to the snow line. So beautiful!

Sometimes called Lago Esmeralda because of its blue-green color, this strikingly beautiful glacial lake is bordered by steep cliffs.
We arrived at the lake in time to get the ferry to Puella but the trip takes 6 hours (including 3 hours at Puella, a small town with nothing much to do once there). We managed to take a trip on a smaller boat as recommend by the many selling ferry tickets and had one and a half hours on the lake. We went out round the Isla Margarita and back. We were lucky to have fantastic weather with view of all the surrounding volcanoes and mountains and had a wonderful trip. Having saved several hours we then got stuck on the road back out of Petrohue for and hour and a half whilst workman laid a pipe but you can't have everything. A beautiful place in the sunshine...

We absolutely loved this road trip and would recommend it to anyone with an adventurous heart. No, the hotels are not great and the road conditions tend to be poor, but no one should some to this part of the world looking for luxury. This trip is 100% and the incredible natural beauty of remote Patagonia. We have been all over South America, and this is the single most incredible stretch of wilderness we have encountered, even surpassing Torres del Paine. The only gripe we had was how difficult it was to find any relevant information about the trip and what to expect. We did ours in a small 4x4 rented round trip from Puerto Montt. After driving all the way to Caleta Tortel, we returned to Coyhaique and crossed into Argentina. We then linked this trip into another week on Route 40 and the Seven Lakes before crossing back into Chile at Cardenal Samore. Absolutely a perfect adventure. If you are looking a detailed guide to road tripping the Carretera Austral, just internet search our name, Career Break Adventures with Carretera Austral. Happy driving!

The endangered alerce tree dominates this Lakes Region park. The alerce is in the same family as the California Redwood and some are said to be 4000 years old.
Great time with hike around Alerce Andino National Park. Great place to know about rainforest or Selva Valdiviana, one hour drive South from Puerto Varas city. Get your rain jacket, fleece and good trekking boots because is a wet trail almost all the time. Enjoy!

Uncrowded, good facilities, easy hiking trail, interesting historical information. This national park makes for an excellent and relaxing day trip from Castro. Bring a picnic lunch and take your time strolling along the boardwalk.
