The history of this legendary castle goes back 800 years. For a long time, Kalmar Castle was an important fortification and known as the key to the kingdom because of its strategical location. The Swedish-Danish border was located only a short distance to the south, because Scania and Blekinge were Danish territories at the time. Kalmar Castle was given its current design during the 16th century, when the Vasa kings Gustav, Erik XIV and Johan III rebuilt the medieval castle and made it into a Renaissance palace, furnished and decorated in continental fashion. Even before then the castle had played an important role in Nordic politics, for example as the location for the signing of the Kalmar Union in 1397. This event was celebrated during the whole year of 1997, the union's 600th anniversary. Kalmar Castle is a symbol for Kalmar. The castle's history features international politics, court intrigues, fiery sieges and fierce battles. Today the castle is vibrant and lively place where many people visit.
Highly recommendable to visit! Fantastic medieval castle with authentic sceneries. Would be good though to read-in a bit on the history before visiting.

The farm is a lovely place for meeting the animals, touch them, learn about them and let kids take part in the activities. We have no kids, but when we have them, we will make Skälby part of our weekend strolls. There are places for a picnic in the garden, bringing your own food or taking it from the café. Absolutely recommend the visit.

Eketorp fortress is Swedens only totally excavated and rebuild fortress. It is beautifully situated on the south of Öland, in the middle of the worlds largest Alvar and in the World Heritage of southern Öland. There are rebuild houses from both the Iron Age and the Middle Age. In the museum there is a exhibition from Ölands 14 other fortresses, from the same era. In the summer there are many activities for both children and adults.
We came to see the rebuilt fort and were pleasantly surprised at how beautifully they had rebuilt the houses - was especially impressed by the little museum that contained tons of interesting facts. It was a very unique experience as everyone working there were dressed like they were from the medieval period and they offered free activities like "frying" bread on a big hot plate, playing with swords and shields with the staff, pouring molten tin into a mould to make a trinket, and playing a number of games from the medieval period. They also had a number of demonstrations through out the day, like sword fighting, the acting probably could be improved but it was none the less impressive that they do such reenactments. We had a lovely day though it rained, it was worth the entrance fee.
