10 Things to do Good for Adrenaline Seekers in Powys That You Shouldn't Miss

January 21, 2022 Chanda Heide

Wales' spectacular scenic rural heartland, and the site of Brecon Beacons National Park, Powys is a lush land of verdant mountain valleys, craggy caves and quirky towns. The staunchly nationalistic area offers appealing outdoors opportunities. Canter on horseback through the rugged Brecon Beacons mountain range. Walk or cycle the charming valleys. Other draws are commanding Powis Castle near Welshpool and the Centre for Alternative Technology, a sustainable development center, near Machynlleth.

We have just spent a week in the cottage with our two children 9 and 11 on site which is in a beautiful, peaceful setting. The wildlife is abundant. We did several treks on their amazing friendly horses and had enjoyable lessons to bring on our riding skills. I don’t think you can see the black mountains any better than on horse back, the scenery is spectacular! Huge thanks to our welcoming hosts Carol and Hayden and our trekking guides Katy, Lucy and Daisy who are lovely, hard working and made it a fantastic experience for us.

Thanks to the staff; great instruction, amazing surrounds (and private rally tracks) this day was absolutely great fun. Most of us were novices (they they cater for more seasoned drivers as well) and I have to say that at the start I thought "there's no way I'm going to be able to go around the track like that"! By the end of the day.. well ok... I wasn't consistent, but defintely got some good power slides around the track going. Then there was the rally driving. Then there was being driven at insane speeds... all in all loved every minute - highly recommended.

Mick Extance Off Road Motorcycle Experience

Reviewed By Perky_101 - Trowbridge, United Kingdom

Having never ridden an off-road motorbike I was a bag of nerves and excitement about the day. I shouldn't of been nervous as I finished the day full of confidence and smiles. Summing the experience up in one word.... FUN! I booked a 1-1 training experience. My riding went from lurching the bike about to smooth and confident in a single day, I have already booked another as I'm now hooked. It started with a safety briefing, due to the current Covid pandemic I was also informed of handwash stations etc. Once kitted up it was off to meet my instructor, Mick Extance himself, who is one of the friendliest blokes I've ever met. He asked about my riding experience and I felt immediately confident the day would be tailored to me. After a brief rundown of the bike, we headed off to a flat training area to get used to basic off-road techniques. Then we were off through a mix of terrain, stopping regularly to take in the stunning landscape, catch our breath, and chat. At every step Mick was explaining how he viewed the terrain, approached obstacles, and shared his wealth of experience. By the end of the day I was dirty, tired, and grinning ear to ear. The whole team are friendly, welcoming, and approachable. One of the best experiences I've had.

Want To Canoe?

Canoeing on the River Wye We invite you to 'get away from it all' and discover the beauty of the River Wye. The Wye is one of the most beautiful rivers in the British Isles and one of the few you can navigate, without restriction, for over 100 miles. It meanders through picturesque countryside to where it joins the River Severn at Chepstow and is well populated with wild life. Herons, Cormorants, Kingfishers, Swans and Otters are frequently seen. This peaceful setting is the ideal place to spend a few hours, a day or even a week. Hire a canoe. Leave your car on our free riverside car-park. Take a picnic (we provide barrels)... ...then canoe downstream. We will pick you up, Free of Charge, from one of the designated access points and return you to your car. Should you have any distance to travel to return home, bring along a change of clothing in case you get wet! Wear something old to paddle in, together with old trainers, sandals or 'crocs' - NO WELLINGTONS. Don't forget your sun-cream and hat if it is sunny. If you decide to go for a few days or a week we can provide you with details of camp-sites and directions to the nearest pub for an evening meal. Again, we pick you up at the end of your holiday and bring you back to Hay and your car. For those who prefer home comforts, there are a few B&B establishments along the Wye. (It is advisable for people to have had some experience before going on the river - particularly those taking children).

From the call to book our slot, through to the safety briefing, the test runs and on to the track, the experience was both fun and exciting. Andrew has a welcoming way and a lovely sense of humour. My 10 year old nephew had the most brilliant time and I have to admit, so did his aunties. The first place trophy went to our nephew who was over the moon - a lovely memory created. Thanks Andrew. Would go visit again and would recommend it.

Yamaha Off Road Experience

Reviewed By Trooper104 - Taunton, United Kingdom

I normally ride a standard BMW 1200GS. Never been off the tarmac so this was all new to me. I opted not to bring my own bike (great decision). I wanted to learn what off roading was all about and chose the Yamaha 700cc Tenere Experience day. As a much lighter bike than my own to learn on it was much much easier to lift it up if you were to dismount unexpectedly. They provided brand new bikes and very good off road clothing, helmets and proper off road boots. In fact the very best of kit. I had a choice of a standard Tenere or one of 4 available, on the day, lowered versions. I opted for the lower version. This turned out to be a good choice as you will be pretty tired as the day goes on and any extra assistance in getting on and off the bike either voluntarily or otherwise will be much appreciated. I didn’t know that there was a choice so book a lowered one in advance if you are not 6 ft+ tall, or a regular rider of tall off road bikes, trust me, you will have a better day for it. I am 5’ 10” and ride a standard GS without any problems but the extra height of the enduro bikes is significant if you are not used to it. We were given good instruction and information and ride tips/techniques on how to tackle the terrain which varied from mild forestry tracks to more slightly challenging ground as the day progressed. There was always at least two instructors per group. You were never pushed into anything you didn’t wish to do, you ride at your own pace and progress or bimble along as you wished. Stunning scenery is a given in these parts and with great routes and instruction you will have a great day. I do recommend you stay the night before locally if you have to travel some distance so that you are fresh for a great day out. Certainly plan to stay the evening that you complete your day as you will be tired. I look forward to returning for another trip. Good value when compared to the very over priced BMW Adventure Days.
