10 Things to do Good for Adrenaline Seekers in Brooklyn That You Shouldn't Miss

April 19, 2022 Mollie Coke

It seems like most folks have a grandmother, great-uncle or some other distant relative that used to live in Brooklyn, or perhaps a friend that lives there now. In the early 1900s, it was a mecca for immigrants arriving via Ellis Island. A hundred years later, young professionals and artists left pricey Manhattan digs for Brooklyn's cheaper and more expansive space. Neighborhoods like Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope, which had fallen into disrepair over the years, were restored and reborn as funky enclaves. Walk or bike over the historic Brooklyn Bridge (or ride the subway) to Brooklyn Heights for a stroll along the Promenade and breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline. Meander through Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens for a taste of nature in the urban wilds. Catch a performance at the world-famous Brooklyn Academy of Music. From the delicious Italian restaurants of Bensonhurst to the Irish bars that line the avenues of Bay Ridge, from the hotdogs and rollercoasters of Coney Island to the bagels and handball courts of Greenpoint, Brooklyn is a state of mind as well as a dynamic community. Discover why, no matter where people move on to, they remain Brooklynites at heart.

One of the more unique Escape rooms I've ever done. The puzzles were not mind blowing or super difficult but the atmosphere was amazing. Great sound effects, creepy visuals, tons of times where you go "do I reeeeeeally want to 'risk my life/sanity/health' to solve the this room. The set up is great and everything is well-thought out. Will definitely return for the other rooms

We did the the Maze and the Curse. The game master was great. He seemed very enthusiastic about the games and helped set a deeper state of immersion with the intro of the stories. We have done escape rooms across the globe and tried several establishments in NYC. Kommata is by far the best. Immersive stories, great technology and the decor is amazing too and right on the money for the stories told. Many games claim to be scary but the Curse truly is. It’s probably the scariest room I’ve done, that didn’t involve actors. We also tried City of Ashes at the BK location which also has quite a few of scares. I definitely recommend these games. We will be back for more.

Bury the Hatchet Brooklyn - Axe Throwing

Bury the Hatchet’s warehouse-style space is expressly for ax-throwing. First, instructors lead one-on-one safety lessons before the one and a half hour sessions get underway. Bury the Hatchet works tournament-style, letting groups of up to 12 players compete against each other in knockout rounds.

We had such a great time throwing axes at this place for our first time. Friendly staff all around, including our axe masters who explained everything to us patiently and guided us through some fun games. My only tiny grievance is about the tipping. I had no clue it was expected and not sure what was appropriate. Why can’t this just be a line item included with the total cost, like a service charge? We were having such a great time and then we noticed the sign about tipping and were scrambling to figure it out. It’d be nice if a service charge was built into the price so we could just enjoy the experience. Aside from that tiny snag, we had a great great time and definitely will be going back!

Some friends of mine invited me to take the Intro Class, and I figured I'd go and try it out. I've been living in quarantine too long, working from home, and I really needed to do something fun, and I'm really glad that I went! We got there and were allowed to choose between tree types of bows to shoot (long-bow, recurve, or compound) and they explained some of the basic differences. I went with Recurve, some buddies went with Compound, we all had fun, don't stress over this decision. They went over some safety information, which is pretty important, but they made it fun. Then we got to shoot! We shot for a few rounds and I started to get the hang of it, but then it was time for the competition, nothing like a little stress to throw you off! haha Well, a friend of mine won and the hour was over before I knew it. I've since gone back after reserving a lane (which you can only do after you complete the intro class) and I've tried different distances out. I'm impressed that the staff will help you out with your form, and give you pointers on technique. It makes it fun to learn along the way! The staff is friendly, safety-conscious, but laid back. It's a fun time with friends, or even by yourself. I strongly suggest you take the opportunity to complete the intro class, and go back for a lane rental, it's a great way to spend an hour or two! If you're worried about COVID, they do a great job. There's plastic between the lanes, and they clean all of the equipment thoroughly between uses. This is a really great activity and very safe. Give it a shot!
