Lalla Rookh Museum

In 1873 the ship Lalla Rookh arrived in Suriname with the first group of indentured laborers from British India (modern day India). They came to work on the plantations, replacing the freed slaves. Officially called indentured labor, in reality simply a new form of slavery. Today, the descendants form a large and successful community in Suriname. Visit the Lalla Rookh Museum for more information

Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral

A very large, beautiful and well maintained wooden cathedral. The interior is well worth a look with the gorgeous wooden arched ceilings and a big suspended cross at the alter.

Het Koto Museum

Reviewed By 860marilynr - The Hague, The Netherlands

I visited Koto museum several times. It's now located on the Prinsessestraat 43. If you want to know about the Surinamese culture in particular the Creole you are at the right place. You will hear many stories about the Koto and the Angisa. At the back they have a beautiful peaceful garden where you can sit and don't have the notice that you are in the city.

Fort Zeelandia

Reviewed By Hermes_NL - Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Fort Zeelandia was first built by the British and extended by the Dutch as a fortification on a prominent point on the Suriname river. It has mostly been a prison throughout the years, and even the scene of recent history with the political December murders in 1982. Now it is a rather gorgeous small museum about the history of Suriname. Outside is the statue of Queen Wilhelmina, also the monarch of Suriname in her days.
