The scenic Looe Valley Line links the bustling market town of Liskeard with the picturesque fishing port of Looe. The train journey is full of beautiful views out of the train window, as the wooded valley teaming with wildlife opens up to glorious estuary views as the river meets the sea. Looe itself is a much-loved seaside destination that’s full of character. It prides itself on its safe beaches for swimming and sunbathing, restaurants that specialise in fresh local ingredients, and a maze of narrow streets full of small independent shops to discover.

St Martin’s Church in Liskeard is a medieval Grade II* listed building, dating back to 1428. It is the 2nd largest parish church in the Diocese of Truro. It comprises a central and two side aisles, plus a Lady Chapel. It has some beautiful decorative features, and the old font has a superb carved cover. The pulpit is of English oak, with rich arabesque carving. The clergy stall is also beautifully carved and adorned with a carved angel. Perhaps the most unusual feature is the highly decorated war memorial frieze, which includes civilians, as well as the armed forces. With eight women and four men depicted it is very unusual for war memorials. The churchmanship is “open evangelical”. Sunday services are usually at 09:15 (1-hour service with choir and organ), 11:00 (75-minute service with music group, children’s and youth groups) and 18:00. There is a communion service at 09:30 in the church centre on Wednesday mornings. The church can be hired as a venue so access cannot be guaranteed.

We visited here as a group ranging from 4 years old to over 70 and we all really enjoyed it. Staff were very friendly and welcoming right from the start and everywhere felt very safe with regards to covid-19, with social distancing in place, face masks, and everything being sanitised before and after use. We'd pre-booked our slot but had arrived about half an hour early due to the journey being easier than we'd thought, but that wasn't a problem and we were allowed in straight away. We were given hard hats and a welcome talk by the owner who was very nice and managed to get our 9 year old computer-obsessed son interested by relating what could be found in the caverns to Minecraft! When entering the caverns we had the place almost to ourselves to explore. There were lots of things on display on the first floor, then we descended the 60 steps to the main cavern, the best bit though was the underground lake that you could light up! After climbing back up and out and handing back our hats, we decided to explore the woodland fairy walk. At first it just looked like a small path around a patch of grass but we then took a turn into a fairy den and then up a path behind it and it turned into quite a long path to explore with hidden fairies, and dragons and even a little house to sit in! The path was narrow in places and there was a bit of an incline so I'd recommend good shoes! It was a lovely walk and really added something extra to the visit. After our walk we ate our picnic in a covered area as it had started to rain a little. It had definitely got busier but not at all over crowded. I'd definitely recommend a visit.

We regularly holiday in Looe, (4th year this year) and have made a trip to Trago Mills an annual trip. Such a quirky building and external decoration makes it look a bit Disney like West Country theme park. The store itself is absolutely packed with items, literally anything and everything you want can be found in Trago. The prices as well appear to be below market average in an area of the UK that isn’t really know for cheap pricing. The choice is unreal. We always manage to walk away having spent hundreds and after picking up a wide variety of goods that are not normal holiday purchases. This year the range didn’t seem as wide but I would probably attribute this to covid. This being said we still manage to fill up on school supply’s, West Country produce, clothing and camping gear, even some early Christmas bits. My eldest daughter goes to university this September and she managed to get bits she needed at a great price. Moving on to the staff, they are helpful, polite and very welcoming. Would recommend this place for anyone just for the experience and defy you not to find something you didn’t realise you needed in your life.
