I came to Beppu with a friend for a one day trip and visited Wander compass. As I had already been here for the famous Jigoku, Onsen and steamed food (that i recommend), we decided to rent the shop bicycles and opted for a ride along the beach, after visiting the local park to see the Plum trees and bamboo. We finished the day with a more local experience in the oldest onsen for Ashiyu and Sand bath! (Try the mud or sand bath while in town). We had a great time spending the day with the staff member (Chika). They will guide you through all the common and less common spots and activities in town depending on what you’re looking for! The shop is located at the station so i recommend you to pay a visit if you are in town :)

We only did a day trip at JPY1200/pax for the onsen, did not stay at their ryokan. It is near bus stop but to note the timing of bus intervals as they are not frequent. Great onsen with magnificent view of Beppu Myoban Bridge. Unfortunately, ladies onsen was not on the first floor where the outdoor pools are on the day I was there (they will rotate between male and female baths). I have been to more beautiful and larger onsens in Japan before but Ebisuya gives the guests a relaxing feel especially the resting area at a corner of the lobby with resting chairs, smell of aromas, magnificent view of the bridge. There are some cute cat crops you can use to take souvenir photos too.

Kannawa Steam Bath

Reviewed By JoanaS388 - Oxfordshire, United Kingdom

This was an extraordinary experience in itself! This is was a steam room like no other! It is really really hot so not for the faint hearted! The lady at the Onsen although could not speak well English we were able to understand each other. Man one side (left) women on the other side (right). Once in, it is the same rules as in a Japanese public bath, you wash yourself and then get dressed in a yukata (sort of casual home kimono) and then a lovely lady guides you to the steam room (picture attached) Wow! It is hot and very narrow, so you enter almost on your knees and lie down on a bed of grassy straw for 8 min. The lady has a timer so she will let you know when to get out but you can also leave earlier if you need to. But wow, when you are in it is a great feeling of calm and relaxation. This is a really local and very Japanese onsen. LOVED IT!

Visited here twice and it’s so enjoyable. A very transitional sand bath set in an very old Japanese style building. Can imagine that is very grand back in 30s. One point to raise out , the staff please remind the customers to close the door of the sand bath bathroom after they are leaving. People are naked inside the dressing room and if they left the door open, ppl can see thorough everything inside the bath house when they wandering or looking around !

Hyotan Hot Springs

We came here for the Sand bath experience after reading the reviews. This place is relatively new and clean. It looks like it has been renovated and the baths are huge. There are many baths and pools, and they even have a steam bath. We spent nearly 2 hrs here and we came after 7 thinking that they still have the after-hours admission rate. I think they have done away with the night rate and charge everyone the same ¥780 for admission, and ¥380 for yukata rental. Even paying the full price, i would still recommend this place, its well worth it.

Dream Town Beppu

Reviewed By Emily2018_G_Scott - Sydney, Australia

Came here to look for dinner and was pleasantly surprised with the mall’s offering. 1. Free car park This is a bonus in Japan especially if you have paid parking in some cities like Kanazawa. 2. Restaurants We ate at a nice Japanese diner that serves Yuri Pork on rice, it was delectable. Ordered nabe with udon, that was delicious. We finished every morsel of food. Next day, we came back for lunch at the shabu shabu restaurant. It was reasonably priced, fresh cut meat, plenty of vegetables and price is inclusive of hot tea. Highly recommended if you are a fan of shabu shabu. 3. Children’s tidbits galore There’s one level of the mall dedicated to children. There’s one shop that sells all sorts of tidbits and toys, must visit. 4. Basement supermarket The local food aisle on Japanese rice crackers are full of choices. Prices are reasonable. I like to buy Japanese drip coffee, there’s plenty to choose from and the prices are half of what is sold outside Japan and maybe some brands are not sold outside. Definitely recommend if you would like to enjoy some indoor time and relax while shopping for local goodies.
