I've taken up birding in the past four years and try to set aside time for birding whenever I travel. I've made it a practice to keep lists of species I see, and it's always helpful--especially in new places--to go with local experts who can help me identify what I'm seeing, including professional guides where the birding is especially spectacular. Well, Oaxaca fits the bill for spectacular birding, and Pto. Escondido Ecotours ("Lalo Ecotours" on FB) fits the bill for expert guides. I was in Pto. Escondido for a family vacation last week, and set aside a day for birding (unfortunately, my wife and sons aren't birders--otherwise, I would have birded there every day). The Laguna Manialtepec is the premier birding spot on the Oaxacan Coast, with some 230+ species registered there (out of over 900 in the whole state). Everardo ("Eve") and his father, Lalo, guided us through the lagoon. They know its every nook and cranny, every inlet and alcove, and know where to find specific species and nesting sites. They were patient in stopping and allowing me to take photos; their explanations of bird behaviors and field marks to distinguish between different species evidenced a knowledge equaled only by their passion for birds. I went with a list of target species, including many I hadn't seen and some I'd seen before, but only a few times or once. We saw over 70 species on the excursion, including most on my target list, some of which were lifers (white-throated magpie jay, bare-throated tiger heron, boat-billed heron, wood stork, mangrove vireo), and others of which I hadn't seen in a long time (roseate spoonbill, white ibis). Besides being knowledgeable, Eve and Lalo are friendly and outgoing. We stopped for lunch on the sandbar that, out of the rainy season, separates the lagoon from the Pacific. (Word to the wise: I'm not sure if it's expected, but it's generally good manners to pay for the guides' meal, as well as give a tip to the motor boat pilot.) Conversation was easy and free-flowing. We spoke mostly in Spanish with Eve and Lalo, but we interspersed enough English in to let me know that they're fluent in English. I'm very happy with the birding excursion and just can't say enough about Eve and Lalo.

We booked three excursions as part of a package while at Dreams. We did a city tour, turtle release with bio-illuminessence at night, and a waterfalls adventure trip into the mountains. Since we are a family of 5, we were lucky enough to be a big enough group on our own. All 3 of our guides were extremely knowledgeable about their subject, and interested in knowing more about our family and what we wanted to experience. Two of the trips were estimated to be 7 hours but took longer because we talked so much and had so much fun while out there. We were never rushed and were very well taken care of. Highly recommended.

My friend and I booked Tomas for a tour up to Llano Grande falls. He picked us up at our hotel at 8:30 and then we travelled the 2 hours up to the falls through little villages along the climb up the mountains. Tomas was very knowledgeable about the area as he is from this area. He pointed out different species of trees and plants along the way, and even took a picture of a tree so he could find out later what it was. He's always striving to learn new things and increase his knowledge. Although the trip was long and bumpy, Tomas drove very carefully and slowly which was much appreciated.(newer very clean air conditioned car) Contrary to past things I have heard about this trip to the falls, there is no " awful drop off" from the road, at least I didn't see any. The road has been improved over the years, and more and more is being paved, especially through the villages. We stopped a couple times along the way, once to pick up a 'treat' from a local store, which turned out to be tostadas that are flavoured with coconut and chocolate I believe. When we stopped to have coffee, we dipped these into our coffee. The restaurant we stopped at for coffee (which was to be our lunch stop as well) sat beside a beautiful stream that flowed past as we sipped at our delicious coffees. When we arrived at the falls, Tomas was sure to mention that we should take the available walking sticks to help with our walks down to the falls. It was an absolutely beautiful peaceful magical walk down the path beside the river to the falls. Tomas was always watchful that we were managing the somewhat uneven pathway (lots of tree roots etc that could trip you up if not watching) and helping where needed. Tomas was sure to point out the various butterflies along the way, each specific area had different species. One in particular was the glass-winged butterfly- had clear wings outlined in black. He managed to get a picture of one (which he was happy to share with us). Once at the falls, we were free to do what we wanted for as long as we wanted. He was always nearby if we needed help or had questions. At the falls you can swim behind the falls, it takes a minute to get past the rushing falling water, but it was not a problem for me (and I'm not the best swimmer by far). It was really fun to get behind the falls, Tomas was already there and took pics (which he shared of course!). The area where the falls are is shallow for the most part, and you can sit in little 'pools' like having a whirlpool. There are a couple young ladies at the falls applying clay masks if you wanted (for free), which is the red clay from the local mountain. It dries, then you rub it off, then rinse. My friend and I both were surprised at how soft our skin was afterwards, and ended up buying some when we met the young lady at lunch again. We stayed approx. an hour and a half at the falls, then went to lunch (you can stay as long as you like, Tomas was very flexible with the day). Lunch was excellent and included chicken mole, which was the first time I'd tried mole; such a combination of wonderful flavours. We had time to visit 2 little shops in the area also which had local herbs and medicines, local soaps, nuts, chocolate, mezcal etc. It was so nice to be up in the mountains, at these lovely little local shops learning about everything they had to offer and how it was made. I would highly recommend Tomas for any tour as he is very knowledgeable , patient, considerate and flexible. Excellent English, he even had brought along cold water and beer in a cooler for us, made sure to check if we needed bathroom breaks every so often. Make sure you only bring one bag along with you to the falls, and water shoes if you have. To walk the path to the falls you should have something a little better than flip flops. There are quite a few steeper steps down to the falls (and back up again), so people with difficulty walking and stairs might not be able to do this tour. We were back at our hotel by 5:30.
