Queen Street Mill Textile Museum

See the world's only working steam powered weaving mill bring the past to life. A rare chance to re-live the days when steam ran the world!

This really has to be the most interesting industrial museum I've visited - everything from a steam engine to over three hundred restored weaving mills and the full story of how it all works from very informative guides. Fascinating (and super cheap too), I was there most of the afternoon it was so good.

An absolutely wonderful tour of both Mills and an opportunity to see the machinery working. This is an absolute must if you are in the area. Wonderful value too. It is closed for the winter season but private tours ( which we had) can be arranged. Lovely friendly staff too #JustDoIt!

Lancashire Infantry Museum

In December my partner and I went to Fulwood Barracks. Our objective was to gain more information about my partners two Grandfathers WW1 military records. The staff on duty were very helpful and were able to provide new and fascinating facts. One of the volunteers, Damian, then gave us an informative tour of the Barracks and told us more about the history of the many exhibits. A memorable day thank you.

This magnificent 600HP engine, with its two cylinders and 16 foot flywheel originally drove 1,250 weaving looms. Open (free) most Saturdays from 11-3pm. The engine is run steam between 1pm and 3.45pm on many Sundays from mid March through to mid November. See website for dates. Lancaster City Museum

Reviewed By MC_Baz

If you are visiting Lancaster for shopping or sightseeing, the city museum is worth a visit. The museum is right in the middle of the shopping area, so needs no special journeys to reach it and entry is free. The downstairs is split into two exhibition rooms and a receeption area. During my visit, one exhibition room was being used for a function of some kind and the other was exhibiting the landscape art of two Lancashire artists which was extremely good. A wide staircase equipped with a stair lift leads to the upstairs areas. The upstairs is split into two areas, the history of Lancaster from the stone age and the history of the Kings Own Royal Regiment from 1680. Both exhibitions are well laid out with exhibits and lots of detail.
