Almost two years ago, the Del Rey closed its famous doors due to non payment of taxes, incompetent management, and CV19 mandates. It was a sad day for all those of us who came to the Del Rey for companionship. However a recent trip to San Jose found the doors open, the yellow CERRADO tape on the doors and windows gone, and the hotel under new management. This includes the Del Mar restaurant across the street. Although at the time of my visit, the hotel was not accepting guests, a skeleton crew manned the Blue Marlin Bar and preparations were being made for a full opening the following week. Those of us who were frequent visitors can live again!

Located on the headwaters of Savegre River (designated as cleanest river in all Middle America by the FAO), within the new UNESCO Savegre Biosphere, the Valle del Quetzal Privat Nature Reserve maintains more than 500 acres (200 ha) under an environmental protection contract with FONAFIFO, most of which is primary Cloud Oak Forest between 2400 and 3000 m elevation (8200 to 10,000 ft). We have many nature trails including along a mile of exclusive river frontage with excellent Trout fishing, bird watching and pure natural beauty.
I could not recommend staying here highly enough. If you want a peaceful place to be surrounded by nature, to bird watch, or to just relax and get away from the world, Quetzal Valley Cabins are a paradise. You really are in the heart of the forest, and the views from the windows are incredible. You can see so many different species of birds just whilst sitting and having your breakfast. There are some nice little trails on the property as well as access to other trails in the area, and San Gerardo de Dota is one of the most beautiful places we've ever been. The cabins are beautifully rustic and the kitchen was well equipped with the shop just up the (very steep) road. The wood burning stove makes the cabin cosy in the cold evenings, and it is such a relaxing place to be. All in all, we had a perfect stay for the four nights we were here - Peter, the owner, was very helpful with advice and tips, and really made us feel welcome. We wish we could have stayed longer, and will definitely be back if possible in the future!

While traveling to San Jose Costa Rica for some dental implants I stayed at Ester's place on two separate occasions. It is located within a few kilometers of Cima Medical Center and many of the local medical and dental providers of the area. Staying at Ester's was more like visiting a friend than it was staying in some hotel or even an Airbnb. The rooms are large and have their own bathrooms and visitors have access to a full kitchen if they choose to prepare their own meals. The owner, Ester, was extremely helpful and accommodating, going above and beyond to make my stay enjoyable and comfortable. When I had an issue with leaving my cell phone in a local Uber she even assisted me in retrieving it. While I was apprehensive about staying at someone's home while they were still living there, I felt extremely comfortable and had plenty of privacy. The owner was very unobtrusive but available for any of your needs. I did notice that some of the travel sites tend to not have the correct availability shown and have found that it was best to contact her directly through WhatsApp. The prices were way lower than what I expected of what I would have paid in any of the local hotels having only paid $40 per night in October of this year 2021. For anyone traveling to that area for medical tourism purposes I would highly recommend staying at Ester's place

This is a very modern hotel by Costa Rican standards, the rooms and bathrooms are of a goof modern standard. If you have a room facing the street you will get some noise, but with earplugs it's okay, without earplugs you might want to ask for a room towards the back of the building. The location is excellent and staff are friendly and professional. Breakfast is at the adjoining cafe and you have plenty of choice from a traditional Costa Rican breakfast to cereal and toast. Overall a good modern option in the heart of San Jose.

Hostel Club is a small and cozy run by family Hostel in San Jose. Very close to downtown San Jose, Sabana Park, National Stadium and Escazu. On the way to the airport. Big cozy rooms with big closets Multiple common areas including: 50' HD TV with Play Station 4 and surround system, ping pong table, big yard with a mango tree.
It is located 5 mins walking from Estadio Nacional. It is like a Rooming House with a shared Kitchen and a beautiful Garden area. We stayed at Room #1 which had a Smart Tv (Netflix/ YouTube), 1 big bathroom, 1 king bed and Desktop Table + Ergonomic Chair for business. Wifi worked perfectly all the time. Nice place. Thanks!

Paraiso Quetzal Lodge has been recently selected by the European Association of Friends for Nature (EAFN).
My partner and I stayed here for one night, but wish it could have been a week! Jorge, the owner of Paraiso Quetzal, actually picked us up and drove us from our other accommodations deeper in the valley of San Gerardo to Paraiso Quetzal. Jorge took great pride in explaining that the lodge is family run and built! The room we had was gorgeous--probably the coolest/nicest accommodation I've ever had. Though the trek to the dining area was a bit of a slog, it was all worth it for the incredible food. The trails around the property are all extremely well-maintained, and we had a wonderful time exploring the massive property. Be sure to head to the top of the overlook for sunset!
