10 Sightseeing Tours in The Ardennes That You Shouldn't Miss

November 12, 2021 Hana Mouser

A smorgasbord of flavors come from this lofty land in the hilly southeast of Belgium: game, wild boar, venison, smoked ham, the region's famous paté and world-renowned Trappist beers. Primarily located in Belgium, the Ardennes mountains also nudge into France and Luxembourg. Dense forests flank the steep hillsides, and market towns and villages perch on river banks. Spring and summer show this lush area at its best, but cross country skiing opportunities make a good case for winter visits.

We set aside the Brussels Capital of Europe to focus on the Brussels Capital of Belgium. A city where the cosmopolitan mixes with the vestiges of the Middle Ages and Modernism, so heterogeneous in its history, its art and its culture that many celebrities surrendered to its charm: from Victor Hugo to Karl Marx, going through Baudelaire, Vincent Van Gogh or Pieter Brueghel. The heritage of its streets is so overwhelming that the hours become minutes admiring the splendor of its buildings, statues and art galleries.

This tour perfectly shows the most underestimated part of Belgian culture - its cuisine. Not only beer, but the kitchen as general. Mussels, chips and chocolate (for dessert) are the first thing to taste when on Belgian soil.

This tour is one of our bestsellers! Luxemburg is certainly a modern and vibrant city with a rich history and impressive modern and ancient architecture. To our own surprise our guests seem to value very much the little town of Dinant which they proclaim to be very “typical Belgian, surprisingly picturesque and unbelievably interesting”. It is indeed the town of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone and the cradle of the Leffe beer.

A couple of lovely towns, full of history, culture, and architecture. If you're fascinated by architecture, then you'll be more than happy with your visit. And the staff of this particular tour makes your trip even more pleasant.

8. The Belgian Ardennes

Mike Eyns Tours

We will start our tour in Namur, the enormous citadel spread over Champeau Hill still dominates the scene of a constant city under siege. The variety of landscapes along the Namur section of the river is a result of the types of rock through which it passes. We will reach Dinant. Dinant, lies in a remarcable setting in The Meuse Valley. In the past, Dinant was a fortress, renowned for the chased copper-and brass-ware produced here since the 12C. The little capital of the lovely Semois Valley is one of the most popular places in the Ardennes, with canoeing on the river (break?) and a wonderfull countryside. From Bouillon, still following The Semois, we will reach Orval and its World Famous Abbey. From Orval, we will aim Han-Sur-Lesse, exceptional village, in the heart of the Parc National de Lesse et Lomme, an extensive limestone upland crossed by the two rivers. From Han, we will drive to La Roche-en-Ardenne. From La Roche, we will follow The Upper Ourthe Valley.

Thankfully, the battlefield is largely as it appeared in 1815. Rolling hills, farm fields, the wooded and walled Hougoumont (well-restored) and la Haye Saint (not so much). Still, the vibe and the atmosphere is evocative of the crucial Napoleonic struggle that took place here. The museum is excellent. Creative displays, lots of artifacts. The great Lions mound is a bit of a distraction. But it does afford spectacular views of the entire battlefield. Two downsides: the busy road that runs right through the field, north to south, is a little offputting. And Napoleon’s command position was overgrown with shrubs when I was there.

9. WW II - Bastogne - The Battle Of The Bulge

Mike Eyns Tours

This will be another most memorable day, to tribute to these thousands of Heroes who offered their lives for our freedom. We would drive straight to Bastogne and start this journey by visiting the Historical WW II Museum and the Memorial “ Mardasson Memorial “ erected by the Belgians remembering the American Liberators. This extraordinary monument is constructed in the shape of a five pointed star and was built in honor of the 76,890 American soldiers who were killed, wounded or missing in the Battle of the Bulge. Another popular destination which your guide will ensure you don't miss is the Bois de la Paix, The Wood of Peace. In a design that is only visible from the air, 4,000 trees have been planted and laid out in the symbol of human tenderness - a mother and child. From Bastogne, we will get to Luxembourg city for a little discovering, before visiting The American Cemetery in Luxembourg. Later, we will aim Ettelbruck to visit the General George S. Patton Memorial Museum.

We spent 4 days in Brussels just before Christmas, returning home Christmas Eve. The markets were lovely, very busy and plenty of stalls. However, we were very disappointed in the lack of Christmas music that was played around all the markets. Even in the evening with all the lights and the number of people out there was still very little Christmas music being played. We had a day in Bruge and visited the markets there and still very little Christmas music. Being so near to Christmas being able to listen to Christmas songs would add to the atmosphere.
