10 Sightseeing Tours in Puerto Morelos That You Shouldn't Miss

April 24, 2022 Weston Hennigan

Puerto Morelos, a peaceful village on the Mayan Riviera, is a place to experience the genuine Yucatan. Puerto Morelos makes an excellent base if you’re looking for someplace quieter than glitzy hotspots like Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Government eco-reserve designations protect the reef and mangroves—and the village itself—from development. Outdoor options range from thrilling jungle and diving adventures to serene bike rides or moped explorations.

This was hands down one of the best excursions that I have taken in Cancun. You receive the red carpet from the time of booking, throughout the excursion and even afterward. Our tour guide was Iliana and you should ask for her. She is very caring and so knowledgeable. The tour is very structured, yet flexible. We chose to be picked up at our hotel and it was a private tour for the whole day. All of the places we visited were so different and we had an action packed day. We started with a little history lesson at a Mayan ruin. Then were amazed by the animals at the conservatory. After that we took a nice ride to the jungle to go ziplining and ride ATV's/ We then relaxed in an above ground cenote. Our day ended with shopping at a local hidden beach named Puerto Morales. Every location was fun and offered something different for each of my family members. It was a full day of activity and Iliana was engaged the entire time. She also took some amazing pictures and video of our time on the tour and sent them to us along with local recipes. This is an amazing tour not to be missed. Try to plan this one earl yin your vacation as it provides a great overview! The tour guide always makes the tour as well and I cannot say enough amazing things about Iliana.

We originally booked a tour with this company which was canceled due to not meeting the six person minimum. Very disappointing because nowhere on their website or in the initial email was it mentioned a six-person minimum was required. We rebooked for the next day with a pickup time of 11:30. We waited over 45 minutes for transportation which never arrived. We were told driver was caught up in construction traffic. A big waste of our time! A word of the wise, "If your early, you're on time. If you're on time your late" The driver should have anticipated delays and left enough time for this. Communication: In order to get a reservation you must email the company first. I thought the communication was extremely slow often taking hours to respond and even days. This company needs to work on a faster more efficient streamlined booking system like all of the other tour companies do. Transportation: Thier initial contact email says it is $15 a person see below quote, "We also offer roundtrip transportation for $15/person. Please let me know if you have any questions and we look forward to serving you!" Thier website says, "Please note that when booking any of our services we can offer roundtrip ground transportation for $10USD per person for hotels within Puerto Morelos and Punta Maroma and $15 USD per person for hotels in Cancun and the Riviera Maya" This company needs to be more honest about transportation fees. They wanted to charge me $30 a person from the hotel zone area. They need to let customers know that transportation is NOT a flat rate, it is dependent on the location from the marina. Finally $73.30 was the price I received on my invoice for one person for the trip. Website says $73.00. $0.30 may not sound like much, I'm just curious where the change came from? After all of this we were told on Monday that our $75.20 deposit would be refunded. Four days go by and finally deposit arrived. It should take less than 3 minutes of your day to issue a FULL refund not four days. Overall my experience with this company was a disaster! Hopefully manager/owner will read this out loud a few times and improve thier business. Quick recap of this company so I can drill in their head just how terrible they are. 1- They lie about the cost of their trip adding change to the per person trip cost. 2- They lie about Transportation cost and double the price when they send you an invoice. 3- When you make a deposit not all of this money is applied to the total trip cost due to PayPal fees. $75.20 was the deposit I made. $72.72 was the amount applied to the final invoice due to PayPal fees. Your company needs to go to a deposit system where you can use a credit card and there is NO fees. Using PayPal for deposits is a horrible idea. Nobody wants to pay unnecessary PayPal fees! Set up a system where a credit card deposit can be used like all of the other tour companies do. 4- Their transportation drivers cannot even show up on time due to traffic. 5. Their communication is horribly slow. It often takes hours and days for them to respond to a simple message even if they have your phone number they are super slow.

This is a great concept, but be aware that there are hidden fees in the process. After paying 100 US dollars x2 persons, we got there with plenty of time and were told that there is additional $15x2 fee to pay that we were not made aware of prior to arriving there... and we were not willing to pay for that and were denied entrance to the activity... I believe that all the fees should made clear and upfront when paying foe the entire package... it is a dishonest business to me, AND I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THAT There is plenty more to do at Cancun with clear fees and nothing extra at the counter. That didn’t end there... we called trip adviser for a refund and it was insinuated that the reason we didn’t want to go on the ship was because we couldn’t have any money to pay for hidden fees.. At the end, trip advisor pitilessly offered $25 fees towards any future reservation vs the $200 we paid I highly do not recommend this adventure Advise: for your adventure, it is better to book your activities through your hotel. Way better

We were excited for this one and were very dissatisfied. Arrived at the pick up location. Stood in line to pay dock fee, people were scrambled all around (cutting in lines) and not very organized. We get to beach to get informed about rules (around 10-15 min). When you get on boat you take your shoes off. Keep your belongings close to you. If you say no to Premium (an upgrade) they ignore you the rest of the trip. “Professional” photographer takes pictures of you throughout the trip...we weren’t offered that option. Agency told us Golf carts were $10 to rent but once you get to the island they tell you it’s $35. If you don’t do the tour you are pretty much stuck at the beach with no access to explore the island. Music plays in the background. No entertainment. People hoard the beach chairs and shaded areas so you’re stuck at the food court. Water is disgusting with seaweed. Food was mediocre. Service was very poor. If you don’t speak Spanish, they don’t offer you things or upgrades. You’re ignored most of the time. Kayaking was available (free) and paddle boating (not available) but you needed your driver’s license for that. Who knew. They crowd you onto the boat. Can’t really walk around freely. I’d recommend getting a boat ride to the island on your own terms and renting a golf cart and doing your own thing. Only good thing that came out of it was the snorkeling. Don’t go with this company.

Our day with Jose was beyond words, and we learned so much from our kind, new friend. Not only did we see or hear 63 species of birds (you can see our list on ebird.org), but we enjoyed a delicious breakfast, cooked fresh for us, at a comfortable bird watching station. We then headed out for another walk where we observed more birds, learned about a few important endemic plants and trees, and their importance to Mayan culture as well as medicinal uses. The walk ended under a 300 year old Ficus tree. Jose’s passion for the natural world coupled with his knowledge of birds and biology made for an unforgettable day. Thanks again, Jose. We will most certainly be back to Puerto Morelos for another adventure with you!
