10 Sightseeing Tours in Northern Norway That You Shouldn't Miss

October 31, 2021 Layne Dawes

Home to both the midnight sun (with constant daylight from April to July) and the northern lights, North Norway is a rugged land of steep mountains, deep fjords and scenic coastline, making it a great place for outdoor adventures like dog sledding, snowmobiling and wildlife safaris. It's also the ancient home of the Sami people, 3,000 of whom live (along with 100,000 reindeer) at Kautokeino, Norway's largest municipality at over 3,700 square miles.

We reached Svolvær on a very bad weather , it was raining and cloudy weather in December and I had booked 2 day photography tour with Lofoten Lights. My wife and I were worried on missing out on places in Lofoten as we had only 2 days with us. Next day we got picked up by Eric for our tour,he is a very warm and very friendly guide. He started out our tour by taking to a mirror art installed next to the mountain landscape it was very good, in 2 days he covered all the places which are listed in tour ,he is extremely knowledgeable ,he gave us so many facts,he is an amazing photographer and each and every framing of shots is very good.Even though it was a bad weather he made sure that we waited for getting good light and then he helped us taking many memories in form of photos . We will definitely come back in summer and book a photography tour with Lofoten lights for Eric our guide. He is very professional and an awesome tour guide.

We saw the lights beginning of Feb 2020, and due to very bad weather conditions around Tromso, we ended up crossing the Finnish border. Bart was a great guide and did his best to make the tour unforgettable. The spot he picked was fantastic (frozen lake!) and we were lucky enough to see a mesmerising Aurora display that night. We also had some delicious soup and hot chocolate by the camp fire to warm up. Couldn't be happier!

You’ll find the arctic city of Vardø as far east as you can go in Norway. There’s limited access to professional guides in this area, so why not have your own personal guide directly on your smartphone? You’ll see the highlights of the city through the eyes of a local. Take all the time you need and stop along the way if feel like it. The tour starts from the port, where the Hurtigruten arrives every evening. We’ll go along the shores of Vardø, passing the statue of Willem Barentz, before arriving at the wharves and warehouse of Brodtkorp. The tour also takes you to the dark side of local history by telling the story of the burning of witches at Steglnes. Finally we’ll pass the marvelous Vardøhus Fortress, before arriving back at the port. The tour automatically plays audio at exactly the right time and place using your smartphone's GPS service and the VoiceMap mobile app. Start the tour, put your phone in your pocket, and let my voice guide you through the highlights of Vardo.

Inclusions: Lifetime access to Vardø: Pomors, Radars and Witches in the Far North tour, VoiceMap Application, Offline access to audio, maps, and geodata

Exclusions: Smartphone, Transportation, Food/Drink, Tickets or entrance fees to any museums or other attractions en route

The whole experience was great! Markus did his best to make the trip very comfortable. Even though there was not that much aurora activity and it was very cloudy and even snowing, after a couple hours of driving by the Finish border Markus found an opening with very clear skies and we could see some aurora activities and have great shots of them. All in all a great experience.

This route goes south out of Bodø along the coast over some of the finest beaches in the country. Through deep and narrow fjords, passing jagged peaks close by. At the southernmost point of the route we will see the view of the spectacular Engenbreen Ice Fall slide out from Svartisen and down almost into the fjord. From there the tour goes over the Svartisen glacier itself northbound to the highlight of this tour: A close look at the glacier ice fall as we fly past the glacier edge along the lake Storglomvatnet. Return to Bodø via Beiarn, with streams, valleys and mountain ranges, before we pass through Børvasstindan and the Åseli valley, the signature mountain range to the south of Bodø. Saltstraumen, the worlds strongest tidal current is also along the route back to Bodø.
