This company were organised the transfers on arrival to Mauritius to our hotel resort. It was the most uncomfortable and sub standard transfer we have ever experienced. After a twelve hour flight from the UK we were packed to capacity in a small, old vehicle with no proper air conditioning, small uncomfortable seats and luggage separated only by an old net at the rear of the vehicle. We were then subjected to 45 plus minutes of poor driving in the most uncomfortable vehicle which in the UK would have been compared only to a builder's van. We complained to the rep on arrival at the resort and said we would not be prepared to make the return journey in the same circumstances. When I asked about an upgrade to private transfer I was given a price of 2,000 rupees, this was the same price as the taxi from the hotel. This was not an acceptable price given that we had already paid for a transfer and as we were not able to negotiate anything else with Mautorco, we booked a taxi. Extremely poor service and for that reason we did not even look at trips with this company. Certainly would not recommend.

Pick up upon our arrival went smoothly. The driver was on time and safe. The return, however, was a different story and not a way we wanted our lovely holiday to end. We requested a pick up that would have us at the airport two hours before our scheduled departure. We received word, after the driver was already 20 minutes late picking us up, that our driver would arrive momentarily, so we waited. And we waited, and we waited some more. Our hotel called the driver and was told he was in an accident and that a new driver would be arriving soon. This wasn't true as the original driver FINALLY showed up one hour and ten minutes late to take us to the airport. Again, our amazing hotel called the airlines and told them we were on our way. The airlines said they'd keep the desk open 15 minutes late for us (and they did). We literally JUST made our flight. It was an anxiety-filled, nerve-wracking and very upsetting one hour ride to the airport. The worst part is that there was no explanation from the driver or from John at Mauritius Booking as to why he was late and why they didn't inform us earlier, so that we could have used the hotel airport service or called a taxi. We paid in advance, but I would have paid another service for peace of mind. I don't like giving such a low rating, but the communication after this debacle was non-existent and frankly very, very disappointing.

9. Sunset Catamaran Cruise: Île aux Aigrettes

Pointe Jerome Embarkation Point, Mauritius Catamaran Cruises Mauritius

Enjoy an unforgettable two hour sunset cruise onboard. You are to bring your own snacks and drinks. Depending on the tide and wind conditions, cruise towards the actual remains of the shipwreck of the ''Dalbair'' which sank in 1902 or cruise towards Ile de la Passe and cross the historical scene where the naval battle of the Old Grand Port took place back in 1810. Our crew will set anchor in front of Isle Aux Aigrettes nature reserve so you can enjoy breathtaking scenery all around. There, you will watch the sunset over the mountain tops and watch the sky light up with a golden crimson radiance whilst listening to music

We will wait for him when we come back from fishing and he will show us his catch, if the fishing was good! Some mangwaks (seashells) for lunch maybe? He will entrust them to his sister who will prepare them for us. Sea urchins to create jewels, he will make us discover his work of creation of necklaces and bracelets and that of other local craftsmen. After the family meal, we will wander the streets of his city, Mahébourg ... A day in the life of Jean-Baptiste ...

Eric took us to meet Anjoo in her lovely welcoming house where we participated in cooking a wonderful array of dishes using local produce - a lot of it from her garden. We got really hands on, using the traditional roche karai to grind spices & make pastes, we made traditional bread. It was THE most fantastic experience & it culminated in a most delicious lunch that we shared together. We would thoroughly recommend Eric’s company. If we come back we will definitely do more tours with him. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the history & customs of the Island. Julie & Amir
