Katajanokka

Reviewed By MartyB719 - Jensen Beach, United States

From the Market Square area, you can easily see the large Ferris Wheel. That cape or small peninsula area is known as “Katajanokka.” If it is a nice day, you are rewarded with several interesting sights. Do not miss noticing the famous Presidentinlinna building—painted in bright yellow--is where President Trump and the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin meet in 2018. Presidentinlinna is diagonally across the street from Market Square. Walking right of Uspenski Cathedral is a two storied platform which overlooks a large pool. The views take in the entire harbor area. The Uspenski Cathedral—i.e. the red church—dominates the area. Even if it is closed, there is a beautiful high rock area with rewarding views. On a nice day, people gather to capture the sunset. If you go to the left of Uspenski Cathedral along the northside harbor area you are rewarded in seeing a fleet of “Ice Breakers.” This fleet is docked here for the summer. There are several displays by the fleet which fully explains the history and what they do. Finland is the largest producer of “Ice Breakers.” Along the way is a small bridge filled with “lover-locks” and a restaurant with a large anchor and a very large propeller in front of it. Don’t miss the “Mine Monument,” dedicated to all the people who lost their lives due to mines in the Baltic Sea during WW II. This cathedral for me was the most beautiful architecture, the largest orthodox cathedral in Western Europe, the golden Coppola, the contrast of the red brick with the green is amazing, inside is so beautiful too.

University of Helsinki (Helsingin Yliopisto)

Reviewed By RachtheMage - Los Angeles, United States

I'm not a student here but a tourist who loves visiting universities and library's. University of Helsinki sits firmly to the left of the Senate Square (when facing the Helsinki Cathedral). The library is the highlight of it (please correct me if I'm wrong since I only saw a very small part of the campus as a business traveler). Natural light sheds inside the library, and modern library tools are utilized. Highly recommend to visit the main library and appreciate the amazing piece of architecture. Recommend time to visit is 20 minutes in the library and 5 minutes of the main building by Senate square (not able to enter when I visited).

Had the pleasure of visiting the Helsinki University Library on a walking tour of the city, and it was the one stop I wish we could have spent more time to wander and soak in the amazing architecture. If I had a free afternoon, I would love to just settle in here and read or listen to music.

Helsinki City Hall (Kaupungintalo)

Reviewed By OlegY_12 - Belgrade, Serbia

As in every town we were in Europe, the City Hall also here in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, was the first spot we started with in our exploration of this Nordic, Scandinavian metropole. That is a central, administrative building of City of Helsinki, located near to Market Square and in the vicinity of the harbour in central Helsinki. Very pleasant light blue facade with the rows of six white columns on the ground level and the first storey adorns beautifully this architectural deed of great master, designer Carl Ludvig Engel. Here, in the building of City Hall, are the offices of the Mayor of Helsinki, then meeting rooms for the City Council and City Board. Really imposing architecture for such important institution.
