Queen Victoria granted John Septimus Roe 4,000 acres on the Swan River for services rendered to the British Crown. He planted the first vines in the Swan Valley in 1840. In terms of its contribution to Australian wine making, the Swan Valley ranks alongside the Barossa Valley and the Riverina. The Swan Valley has many more products apart from wine, such as the plump watermelons grown between the vines and a Swan Valley specialty, the luscious table grapes, full of fruit and flavor

All Saints Anglican Church held its first service in 1841, making it the first permanent church in the Swan River Colony, which was founded in 1829. It stands on a small hill overlooking the Swan River, where Captain James Stirling surveyed the area in 1827 when he was exploring the area. This sturdy building hosts services on Sunday and other Anglican holidays.

The attractive site on the banks of the Swan River, just east of the historic town of Guildford, was originally taken up by the colony’s first Governor, Captain James Stirling. By 1831, he had built a cottage there, a retreat from Government House. The property was purchased in 1883 by Charles Harper, agriculturalist, legislator and part owner of The West Australian newspaper. He proceeded to display his position and wealth by building the current house.
