we went to visit, just because we had an hour to kill. little did i know that we would find a true working mill! Nigel Moon - a true living image of windy miller - was more than happy to tell us the history of this great working mill and let us climb up into the upper levels of the tower. Would loved to have been able to buy some flour but as we live overseas it wasn’t really possible. But talking to Mr Moon has made me more determined to buy quality bread or even try to make it myself! great place to take children

The splendid Great Hall of Oakham Castle is one of the finest Norman Halls in England. The Hall is best known for its collection of enormous commemorative Horseshoes donated by members of the Royal Family and Peers of the Realm. It is also decorated with a range of 12th century sculptures. The grounds of the Castle are a peaceful oasis in the centre of Oakham.
Amazing collection of horseshoes and lovely stories about them from our volunteer guide Jim! Free entry and parking. Highly recommended.

After living in large towns, we moved to this little village of Edith Weston. Edith Weston is located between Oakham and Stamford. The village has a wonderful country pub, a village shop, Rutland Water Sailing Club, Normanton Park Hotel and Church. Edith Weston is on the south shore of Rutland Water, A large man made lake, which has everything from beaches to bird watching places dotted around the shores. There isn’t much to do in the village, but there are plenty trails to cycle or walk around Rutland Water. Rutland Sailing Club has courses to learn boating, and become a qualified sailor. There is a campsite, has no amenities but very very cheap for camping. The scenery surrounding this little village is fields and Rutland Water, beautiful to live in the countryside! There is the Rutland Belle boat trip, it has various times it leaves and various outings to see wildlife. They also do mini cruises around the water, only a couple of hours but a wonderful trip and great for spotting those osprey! The wildlife is in abundance, from Ospreys to hedgehogs. Plenty of wildlife to see when visiting. We have seen bats at night, kites, ospreys, and many other creatures! Oakham is roughly 10 minutes drive and has the shops and some take away places. Stamford is roughly 15 minutes drive and has the bigger variety of shops, restaurants and take away services. The closest train station is Oakham. Edith Weston is a wonderful quiet village, safe for kids to play out and for them to grow up. We have lived here for 3 years, made some great friends (the locals are pretty kind and friendly) and have watched our kids grow up in a fabulous environment surrounded by fields, rivers and lakes!

We chose this for my husband's funeral and to the best of my knowledge we were the first people to ever hold a funeral here. It's a wonderful location for it and I would recommend it unhesitatingly. We had a humanist service and the space was perfect, not too overwhelming and not too small, perfect. Parking is no problem, and it makes what could be a dreary experience into something memorable for the right reasons
