As we strolled through the park and as we read all the history, we were uplifted in knowing much of what we had forgotten!

This is a beautiful temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The gardens around the temple are breathtaking and a great place for a quick walk. We took our family on a walk in the gardens around the temple. Great place to feel peace, meditate, and escape the world for a few moments.

Established in 1894, A.K. Smiley Public Library has served generations of patrons in the City of Redlands and beyond. The only “admission fee” is curiosity. Lifelong learning is at the center of activity in the beautiful, historic building and attractive grounds! Unique in its architecture, A.K. Smiley Public Library is an official point of historical interest designated by the California Historical Landmarks Advisory Committee, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
I liked the library of A K Smiley Public Library. They have red pillars. Very strong. There is stained glass windows. The library is very need. There are a lot of books and magazines. The library looks like a huge fortress. Amazing! A must see!

Continuing our quests to visit Southern California cities, we drove over to Redlands, California for a day of sightseeing and exploration. Situated between Los Angeles and Palm Springs, the City of Redlands offers a small-town mentality with a modern environment. Redlands has a fantastic selection of outstanding restaurant, shops, a plethora of outdoor activities, outstanding museums and the famous Umbrella Alley, beautiful murals, and spectacular collection of clocks on display. The Sister City Clock Tower that rolls steel balls down the ramp for each hour is masterpiece. Due to Corona Virus regulations many museums and establishments are temporarily closed (i.e., Lincoln Memorial Shrine and the A K Public Library, etc.). Indoor and outdoor dining at all restaurants have been suspended. Mask wearing and social distancing is mandatory throughout the city. As we wandered around State Street and the surrounding streets, we were able to observe multiple wall murals scattered around the area. There are 40 different murals located in the area. Most are beautiful, and some are weird. Historical Downtown Redlands is a beautiful place to visit and explore. There is so much to see. There are beautiful murals and paintings everywhere. Awesome place to take photos. The unique Redlands Orange Street Umbrella Alley is an amazing walkway with 420 multicolored umbrellas covering the alleyway. This alley is one of the 62 Umbrella Alleys that are spread out across the world. Orange Street Umbrella Ally is open year around. Numerous restaurants line the alley. Cheesewalla is exceptional. Perfect place to stop for a Grilled Cheese Sandwich for lunch. Graffiti style artwork lines the walkway leading into the alley. “The Lion”, “Hannah’s Wings”, “Hate Burger”, “Art of Geoff Gouveia”, and other works of art are on display on the walls. “Hannah’s Wings” is an exceptional piece of art. It honors the memory of Hannah Ahler, a young woman killed in the mass shooting at the Las Vegas 2017 Route 91 Harvest Festival. This was our first visit to Redlands, and we were amazed and impressed with the beautiful sights we observed. A truly remarkable city dedicated to the preservation of its historical past. We will return in the future.

During our visit to Redlands, California, we ventured over to The Lincoln Memorial Shrine only to find this memorial temporarily closed due to the Corona Virus pandemic. As we wandered around the grounds of the Shrine, we observed a bronze bust of President McKinley located on the east side of the building behind the A K Smiley Public Library. (Because of California's Regional Stay Home Order to slow the spread of COVID-19, Library in-person services are suspended until further notice). Interesting head and shoulder bust of a President who was considered a friend of Redlands. Historical records indicate President William McKinley passed tariffs that kept foreign oranges out of America and as a result propelled Redlands, California into becoming “The Naval Orange Capital of the World.” Redlands became one of California’s wealthiest cities. When President McKinley visited Redlands on 08 May 1901, the entire city population was on hand to greet the “Great Redlands Hero.” Just a few months after his visit, he was assassinated. The city lost it hero. Two years later his successor, Teddy Roosevelt visited Redlands and dedicated a memorial bust in honor of McKinley. The plaque reads “Patriot, Statesmen, Martyr.” Over the years, the original monument has changed. The original canopy and columns have disappeared. Redlands has changed also over the years. One will have a hard time finding orange trees in Redlands, today. A remarkable bust dedicated to a President and a friend of the city of Redlands.
