The location is right in the middle of small but rich in history city of Iznik. Small beautiful mosque which some believe it used to be the place where Council of Nicaea was held. Now as mosque although I could see the blurred view of frescoes with splendid architecture inside. For more reading and historical info, I recommend to read the website The Byzantine Legacy.

The best way to explore Nicaea for me is by walking and Iznik - the city itself is walkable. One day is sufficient but I did two days to ensure I didn't miss anything. My e-guide is the website The Byzantine Legacy, it has map indicating where the ruins are located. I spent first day to explore Lake Gate, Roman Theatre and adjacent "Church B", "Church C", South Gate and Southern Gate. For those two ruins of churches, they are not identified yet. South Gate is still quite preserved beautifully, while Southern Gate in surrounding area there are other ruins (maybe ancient stone path ...). Roman Theatre as of April 2021 is closed for visit but the visitors can enjoy the ruins from outside. Second day to Aya Sophia Mosque, ruins of Church of Tryphon, Istanbul / Constantinople Gate (under renovation as of April 2021), Lefke Gate and Hadrian Aqueduct, Yesil Mosque, and Iznik Museum. In the evening time to walk along Iznik Lake: Basilica and Senato Sarayi. Hope sooner to discover underwater Basilica is possible.
