Echternach is one of if not the oldest town in Luxembourg on the border with Germany. The Basilica is a must visit location and gives a complete description of the history of the building and of course St. Willibrord who was born in Northumberland England in the 7th century and after spending time in Ireland as a young man ordained in to the Catholic church by monks there n=he found his way to Luxembourg where he instigated the construction of the Basilica. In the visitor centre in the Basilica there is a 10 minute video in English, Dutch, French and German relating briefly the whole history. Including, if you happen to be here at Pentecoste/Whitsun the renowned dancing procession takes place with visitors from all over the world. Though to be fair what ever time of the year you are here both the Basilica, the adjoining Abbey and the lovely old town are well worth a visit.

Another town right bang on border with Germany. Used as a base for trekking Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland but also worth spending a couple of hours wandering around. Must do: drive between Vianden to Echternach by following the roads along the river. The German stretch is particularly stunning.
