We booked in advance for this guided tour, it costs £13 or £11.25 for seniors/students. It was a fascinating experience.. picked up by small coach, we had to present photographic ID as security is quite tight. You can take photos on the tour but asked to avoid identifying the cadets. We arrived on a special day, quite by chance, called HAVOC DAY. Groups of cadets running around the grounds on different routes, with full kit, hauling hefty telegraph poles. Some looked about to collapse, it was amazing to watch at close quarters. Our guide was an ex officer from the college & spent more than two hours with us, stopping at various points on the parade ground, in front of the captain's house, in the chapel & the museum, in the quarterdeck room & finally outside the college shop, where I bought a handsome navy umbrella as a momento of the day. This was one of our highlights while staying in Dartmouth. You only get to see a tiny part of the college but you will get a great impression of its architecture & history as well as a glimpse of the cadets & their training...

Coleton Fishacre

Third visit to this beautiful house. The grounds are magnificent and stretch down to the river. Unusual plants everywhere adding so much colour and interest. This is by far my favourite NT property - the warm feel of the house coupled with stunning views and beautifully designed and planted gardens surpass all the others.

Wonderful painted and carved wooden screen and pulpit, painted ceiling and balcony. Candles to light. Wish there had been a booklet/notices explaining everything. Well worth dropping in whilst walking round the town.

Greenway

Take this extraordinary glimpse into the beloved holiday home of the famous and much-loved author Agatha Christie and her family. The relaxed and atmospheric house is set in the 1950s, and contains many of the family's collections, including archaeology, Tunbridgeware, silver, botanical china and books. Outside you can explore the large and romantic woodland garden, with a restored vinery, wild edges and rare plantings, which drifts down the hillside towards the sparkling Dart estuary.

Took the ferry from Dartmouth to Greenway and walked up the steep wooded walkway to the house. Wether you are an Agatha Christie fan or not this ‘loveliest spot in the world’ as she saw certainly comes close. The National Trust have beautifully presented this place with a tastefully underplayed cafe and shop surrounded by sublime gardens and in an amazing setting overlooking the stunning River Dart nestles this White House stacked full of Agatha Christie and her family who clearly loved this place and and had very happy times here, it oozes through every twist and delightful turn as you experience this gem.

Little Dartmouth & St Petrox Walk on the South West Coast Path

A high-level 4.2 mile walk on the South West Coast Path around the cliffs above the mouth of the River Dart, where medieval monks kept a light burning in the chapel to let sailors know where the rocks were. Small birds call from the bushes and seals haul out on the rocks around the headland. Allow time for exploring the history around Dartmouth Castle, Warfleet Cove and Gallants Bower.

This is a gorgeous coastal walk with stunning coastal scenery from the coast and then to the river Dart estuary.

Kingswear & Brownstone Battery Walk

A 4.6 mile walk on the South West Coast Path travelling high around the mouth of the Dart Estuary, giving fine views over the 600 year old castles. Passing through woodland dedicated to the memory of a local hero and returning via the Daymark tower, the route visits the extensive remains of the WW2 Brownstone Battery, built to prevent enemy beach landings to the east.

Reviewed By SFM1959 - Colchester, United Kingdom

Get your walking boots on and stride out from Kingswear along the south west coast path towards Brixham. Some tarmac roads to start but follow the path and you soon go up and down through some slightly more challenging terrain, through wooded areas, beside fields and along rocky grassy paths overlooking the sea, with spectacular views. We walked along as far as Coleton Fishacre (National Trust property) for a break and then walked back the road way (a lot less demanding!) Very good half day's walk. You may even be lucky and see seals or dolphins (although we didn't, sadly). Still lovely, all the same! Probably about 5-6 miles round trip but feels more because of all the up and downs!

Dartmouth Castle

One of the most picturesquely sited fortresses in England. For over six hundred years, the castle has guarded the narrow entrance to the Dart Estuary and the busy port of Dartmouth. John Hawley, privateering mayor of Dartmouth and the prototype of the flambouyant "Shipman" in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, began this fascinating complex of defences in 1388. Explore the passageways and climb to the top of the Gun Tower for stunning views out to sea. Child friendly and dog friendly.

Visited over August bank holiday, lovely welcome from the English Heritage team. The castle is actually larger than it first appears, as you can't see it all from the entrance, it has bags of character, history in shovels, loads to explore and a great welcome from the team. 10/10 We spent time exploring the battlements, gun tower, cellars and stores. There's a fab new animation with sound effects on an inside wall in the gun tower showing how the castle was guarded and how the harbour chain was used ... which was brilliant. There was entertainment for children and pirates!! Okay so we didn't have children with us, but it looked great! There is a huge 3D interactive wooden model of the castle that can be wound to see how the castle evolved. Amazing views of the river and places to sit and watch the river 'traffic'. There's also access to the church. There are plenty of places to sit and enjoy a picnic on the mounds opposite the castle, and a lovely cafe/tearoom near the entrance that serves the best apple flapjack ever.
