Think you need an ocean for a beach? Think again. There are miles and miles of sandy lakefront beaches in Michigan (thanks to the four Great Lakes that border it). The west coast of Michigan has especially nice beaches—try a rental in Muskegon, Grand Haven or Saugatuck. You won’t need a car when visiting Mackinac Island. In fact, they’re not allowed—this lovely Victorian resort town is pedestrian-only.

Kalamazoo's original farmers market featuring over 100 vendors weekly. The Kalamazoo Farmers Markets mission is to connect customers and market businesses through honest relationships & support community and local economies through a thriving market culture. Everyone is welcome. We accept SNAP benefits, Double Up Food Bucks, WIC Project FRESH and Senior Market FRESH coupons.
We look forward to the fresh locally produced produce at the Farmer's Market. Unlike in some communities where there are perhaps a dozen farmers or less offering wares, the Banks Street Market has dozens, plus an assortment of artisans offering a variety of items and foods locally produced. The market is a thriving, busy and, crowded area on Saturday mornings. Most of the vendors are repeat vendors from year to year and it is easy to form informal friendships and customer relationships with them.

The Bowerman family has been growing blueberries since 1954. The farm has already picked blueberries along with other local fresh produce. We offer u-pick blueberries in season mid-July through mid-August. We also make delicious blueberry donuts every morning. Our bakery also makes muffins, pies, crisps, coffee cakes, turnovers, homemade fudge and more. Everyone loves our fruit smoothies and soft serve ice cream. Open Sundays after the 4th of July through Labor Day. The store is open seasonally June through November each year. In the off season call to purchase frozen blueberries by appointment.
Just before Thanksgiving they had a pie tasting event. Wow... Talk about fantastic tasting pies. We have enjoyed their blueberries and now are hooked on their baked goods as well. You really need to try their blueberry donuts. Heavenly!

After seeing several paintings by Owosso native Frederick Carl Frieseke in museums around Michigan and elsewhere, I wanted to learn more about the artist and where he grew up, so a stop at the Shiawassee Arts Center was a must! Their Frieseke Gallery holds several original works by the highly regarded American Impressionist artist Frieseke, including "Along the Shiawassee" and "Lady with a Sunshade", plus several fine art prints of works held in other museums or featured in exhibitions. So nice to learn more about the artist and see some additional works. (We also stopped by his boyhood home a few blocks away.) The Center also features a collection of art by local artists or of local interest. At the time of our visit, the Center has just opened a new exhibition featuring five Michigan artists; there were some lovely affordable paintings from each artist. The Center's gift shop is a wonderful place to shop for art from paintings and ceramics to jewelry, cards, and other handmade crafts for your home or for gifts. Definitely worth a visit!!

Abundance of fresh, local fruits and vegetables, local honey, pastries and breads, including several gluten and dairy/vegan free options (the blueberry gluten free donuts were amazing!). Several vendors had plants to sell. They also had food vendors / trucks. Prices comparable to what we expected. Live music and beautiful weather added to the enjoyment. Ample free parking nearby.

A National Historic Landmark, Meadow Brook is the historic home built by one of the automotive aristocracy's most remarkable women, Matilda Dodge Wilson, widow of automobile pioneer John Dodge, and her second husband, lumber broker Alfred Wilson. Constructed between 1926 and 1929, for $4 million, Meadow Brook represents one of the finest examples of Tudor-revival architecture in America. Tours are offered daily. Tour tickets may be purchased in the Museum Store located inside Meadow Brook Hall. Tour reservations are not required. All guests must be accompanied by a tour guide. Tours last approximately 1 to 1-1/2 hours, depending on the size of the group.
Yesterday was the last day for the 2018 Christmas season "Holiday Walk Self-guided Tours" taking place at Meadow Brook Hall. Living so close to this wonderful asset is sometimes a disadvantage as we take it for granted. Big mistake. We took our grandkids and they had a ball. The Hall had placed small candy dishes throughout the building and encouraged kids to search for the paw print placards to find the "treats". What a great way to make things interesting for small children. Our 3-year old granddaughter made great fun of the search game. Visit the hall and do it often.

We shepherd Eastern Market's rich history to nourish a healthier, wealthier, and happier Detroit. Since it began in the 1800s, Eastern Market has gradually become a cornerstone, nourishing its residents by providing fresh and nutritious food throughout Southeastern Michigan. In more recent years, Eastern Market Partnership has built an infrastructure around the market to support our unwavering mission to enrich Detroit--nutritionally, culturally and economically. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, our goal is to maintain Eastern Market's: * Authenticity * Development Equity * Connectivity * Density * Diversity
Been to Eastern Market many times. Saturday’s are pretty much guaranteed to be open, otherwise check their website. Tons of local food, sometimes clothing and jewelry. In the spring, if you are local, go for perennials. You can’t beat the prices - $5.00 for a beautiful Hosta that would be $15.00 at your local nursery. In spring go EARLY (like 7:00 am) for best plant selection. Also check out surrounding businesses like Rocky Peanut Company. A friend from Seattle said “this is way bigger than Pike Place Market!”
