Local legend claims that Freeport was the birthplace of Maine, the decision to separate from Massachusetts having been made in a local tavern way back in 1789. Whether this is truth or folklore, Freeport has much more to offer, including South Freeport, a historic harbourfront village offering up a fresh catch every day. Nearby Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park and the Mast Landing Audubon Sanctuary provide nature trails with scenic views of the Atlantic Ocean over the rocky shores of Maine.

Great experience doing the factory tour. Very friendly staff, good selection of treats, and interesting tour. You get some samples to try and the guide was very entertaining, and informative. Takes about an hour but it will be longer once you get out and shop your treat of choice.

Several types and varieties of breads and cookies. Not your typical bakery. Bright home 3 loaves of bread, most of which has disappeared! Friendly and knowledgeable staff, delicious breads, a Bavarian pretzel that cannot be beat, and a fantastic assortment of jams, jellies, mustards, and oils... Don't pass this bakery by.

A short drive from downtown, nestled back from the road is a quiant little shop, Bessie's Farm Goods. Fantastic shopkeepers can tell you about the many local artists who have filled this small shop with hand made pottery, cards, wool good, wood pieces, decorative items, unusual sculpture and other handmade goods. Also of note, home baked items, aritsian cheeses and all sorts of goods. SUPER reasonable prices on handmade items. this shop was a diamond in the rough find for our girlfriends weekend. HIGHLY recommended by Cool Cat Tours.
