10 Shopping in Downtown Quebec City That You Shouldn't Miss

March 10, 2022 Leonarda Pillsbury

Quebec City may be the only fortified city north of Mexico, but it welcomes visitors with open arms. Explore the Citadel, where you might catch Canadian troops staging a military ceremony. As for food, you could splurge on afternoon tea at the Chateau Frontenac, or do as the locals do and snack on poutine—french fries with gravy and cheese curds.

J.A. Moisan Epicerie

An old grocery store in operation since 1871.

This grocery store has a little bit of everything - premade foods, snacks, maple everything, dried pasta, toiletries, candies. The first night I was in town, I went to grab a few snacks and a quick dinner. Towards the end of my trip, I went back again to buy some souvenirs for friends. If you can't find something in here, I don't know where you'd find it. It's worth going just to see the inside of the store, which I couldn't get over the quaintness without feeling kitschy.

Marche du Vieux-Port de Quebec

This popular marketplace is located near the city's revitalized Old Port area.

I would highly recommend going here first when you travel to Quebec so you can stock up on fresh food (as restaurant food can be quite rich). Keep in mind most of these suppliers speak French only. Highly t commend the almond croissants at the bakery, getting some strawberries and orange soaked cranberries. I would suggest going earlier in the day when it is less busy. It is a stop on the hop on hop off bus tour of Quebec.
