Christchurch, the Garden City, and the Canterbury region are the perfect destination for daredevils. From northern Kaikoura to Waimate in the south, Canterbury is an adventure sports paradise. Hangliding, helibiking, bungee jumping, snowboarding, jetboating, rafting and skydiving get the adrenaline going. Golfing, flightseeing, swimming with dolphins and soaking in thermal pools are more laid-back temptations. Christchurch, a city of parks and gardens, is the countrys third largest urban area.

We really enjoyed pottering around the shop. The art works and homewares were all gorgeous and there was a really good selection of jewellery.

We spent over three hours in this beautifully presented modern Art Gallery, as there was plenty to see, and entry is free. I loved the sailing paintings upstairs, by van der Voorden. He really knew how to portray clouds and waves. The highlight for me was the Ron Mueck silicon sculpture of a man at a table. What brilliant attention to detail (that's real hair). Thank you staff for being so helpful too! If you need a break, there is a lovely restaurant at the entrance, or it is a short stroll to Riverside Markets, which is also well worth a visit. Don't miss this excellent Art Gallery when you next visit Christchurch.

At The Arts Centre Mākete you’ll find local artisans showcasing their quality, handmade goods – arts and crafts, freshly made delicacies and more. Set against the backdrop of the historical Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora, the market offers a relaxing Sunday shopping experience in the heart of the city. This mākete, which is proudly supported by Christchurch City Council through the Enliven Places Projects Fund, runs from 10.00am to 3.00pm every Sunday in winter.
This Sunday only market is a small little market with vendors and food trucks. We especially liked the soap vendor. What we did like is across the street there are woodworker shops and souvenir stores in that little area. Also the building next-door has some wonderful stores inside in the upper floors. So make sure you explore the whole area when you go.

The Happiest Garden on Earth..! Garden of International Significance.. A Josie Martin creation.. Colourful, beautiful balance between garden and art. Don’t miss the fun DVD playing in the contemporary art gallery. Terraced gardens with sculptures and incredible mosaics. Very Unique. A creative feast and a wonderful experience. Only a few minutes walk from the centre of Akaroa.terraced gardens are full of surprises -expect the unexpected at The Giant's House!
What an incredible spot every corner you turn just takes your breath away, how people can comment that the entrance fee is too pricey is beyond us, it’s just incredible and photos don’t do it justice.

Te Ana provides personalised, authentic Maori cultural experiences based around the rock art art sites created by our ancestors. We offer guided tours of our Māori Rock Art Centre, Te Ana, and guided tours to some of the districts most stunning examples of Māori rock drawings, also known as cave art. We are a Māori owned not-for-profit organisation - 100% of the proceeds of our centre and site tours are used for the management of the rock art sites in the district. By choosing Te Ana you are helping us to protect this unique aspect of our culture for future generations. Kia ora!
What an incredible experience ! If you are interested in Maori culture, history, and art this is one of the must-do experiences in the South Island. You can only do it in Timaru. Our guide, Sue was great as she took time to explain the displays in the Te Ana Rock Art Centre and answer everyone's questions. What was equally impressive was her ability to put everything into context both in the past when the rock art was being created and also for current members of Ngai Tahu. My wife loved that Sue was from one of the local runanga and how authentic the experience felt. After the Rock Art Centre, we went out to a significant rock art site which is on private farm land. The rock art was stunning and provoked a lot of discussion between Sue and the visitors including us. The surrounding landscape which is being restored with native plants was equally beautiful. It was a humbling experience to experience such a beautiful and complex art work out in the New Zealand countryside. If you have time, put this trip in your itinerary you won't regret it.

Perfect spot for a Saturday morning visit, with loads of yummy food options including specialty cheeses, breads, venison, gourmet burgers, freshly roasted coffee, etc. Even just taking some time to sit and people-watch is fascinating - lots of different types of people out with their dogs. Parking can be a problem, so arrive early. Well worth a visit.

A popular weekly farmers market held every Friday morning from 9am til 12.30pm. Only 20 minutes from Christchurch. The market operates in all weather all year round. Our market supports over 50 local food producers and growers. Visitors mingle with the locals to get the best of the freshest breads, organic veges and seasonal fruits, coffee, hot brunch selections, artisan products, fish, beer, wine, plants and flowers. Winter is a busy market and summer is huge. Ohoka is a country market located in the domain. It is popular so expect to walk a short distance on busy days. Childrens playground, toilets and EFTPOS available.
I generally go on a Friday stat day and ventured there around 10am on show day in November. The place was busy and had plenty of great stalls selling all sorts of things such as baking, Olive Oil, wine, vegetables, seedlings, meat, Eggs, fruit, exotic mushrooms, cheese, olives, nuts, etc etc. Also there are several craft stalls and several food trucks serving a variety of different styles of food. If you are in the area on a Friday morning then it is definitely worth a visit particularly on a Stat day.
