Biei-cho is an artist’s canvas of snow-capped mountains and fields swaying with lavender, poppies and bright seasonal blossoms. Art galleries feature the beautiful handiwork of local artists inspired by their surroundings, and the Panorama Road is an aptly-named path to all kinds of sites, particularly local farms and craft workshops. Sup in a charming café to get the true essence of Biei-cho.

The gallery is a nice little two-level house, which exhibits the works of a famous Japanese landscape photographer, Shinzo Maeda (1922–1998). He well captures the changing colours, moods and details of the landscape and of the seasons in Biei, Hokkaido. The only regret is that we were given only 15 minutes in this gallery as we were in a group tour. On sale inside the gallery is a selection of the photographer's works in packs of postcards. In a hurry I bought one, which serves as a very good souvenir.

Biei Senka is a great stop in Biei town for local products and relaxation in a cafe space. There is a small market shop selling products including corn and bean snacks made from local farm produce. There is also an attached cafe to enjoy desserts or light meals. Right off a main street in Biei town, there is plenty of parking.
